Well, it's put into a pie plate by tradition.
However, the Lindy's of New York recipe, calls for a 6" springform bundt-cake pan. This is my personal favorite to make.
On the road? Vote goes to Sarah Lee with a graham crust

ok...well, think of it this way...the reason you want to call it a pie is because it's in a small pie dish...but what about big regular cheese cakes...they're in just as big of a size as a regular cake...i think they're just made in pie dishes to keep all the yummy filling together.

the reason it is a pie is due to the structure of the dish being held to together by egg proteins (custard), and has little to nothing to due with the cooking vessel it is prepared in. cakes almost always get their structure from flour protein (glutten), cheesecake most certainly does not.Comment

dictionary.com also incorrectly places pies as a subset of cakes, while the culinary community at large does not.
pies are dessert dishes (often with a crust) that contain a filling like fruit or custard. i (and all of the pastry chefs i have encountered in life thus far) stand behind a cheesecake being a pie.
if you can show me another cake that needs to be cooked in a water bath, relies soley on egg protein for form and needs set time, i'll rethink my stance
i can show you plenty of custard pies that need all of the above
