Well, it's put into a pie plate by tradition.

However, the Lindy's of New York recipe, calls for a 6" springform bundt-cake pan. This is my personal favorite to make.

And, I'm going to have to agree with Alton Brown of Good Eats fame in stating that Cheese Cake is really Custard Pie.

ok...well, think of it this way...the reason you want to call it a pie is because it's in a small pie dish...but what about big regular cheese cakes...they're in just as big of a size as a regular cake...i think they're just made in pie dishes to keep all the yummy filling together.

Here...let's resort to a real defintion and see what it fits.... www.dictionary.com/search

                      PIE

                      NOW

                      CAKE

A sweet baked food made of flour, liquid, eggs, and other ingredients, such as raising agents and flavorings.
A flat rounded mass of dough or batter, such as a pancake that is baked or fried.
A flat rounded mass of hashed or chopped food that is baked or fried; a patty.
A shaped or molded piece, as of soap or ice.
A layer or deposit of compacted matter: a cake of grime in the oven.

                      I think it's a CAKE!!

I am forced to agree with tato on this one, and who am i to disagree with alton brown, food scientists and a space elvis.

                        //edit//
the reason it is a pie is due to the structure of the dish being held to together by egg proteins (custard), and has little to nothing to due with the cooking vessel it is prepared in. cakes almost always get their structure from flour protein (glutten), cheesecake most certainly does not.

I beg to differ...I looked up cheese cake...

                          CHEESE CAKE

Cheese cake: a cake made of or filled with, a composition of soft curds, sugar, and butter. --Prior.

                            PIE
An amount of type that has been jumbled or thrown together at random.

A baked food composed of a pastry shell filled with fruit, meat, cheese, or other ingredients, and usually covered with a pastry crust.
A layer cake having cream, custard, or jelly filling.
but my dear devil from your own definition of pie above
"A layer cake having cream, custard, or jelly filling."
therefor it is a layer cake, AKA a pie

dictionary.com also incorrectly places pies as a subset of cakes, while the culinary community at large does not.

pies are dessert dishes (often with a crust) that contain a filling like fruit or custard. i (and all of the pastry chefs i have encountered in life thus far) stand behind a cheesecake being a pie.

if you can show me another cake that needs to be cooked in a water bath, relies soley on egg protein for form and needs set time, i'll rethink my stance i can show you plenty of custard pies that need all of the above
