J- Start out with epee. It gives you a chance to work on the basics, get your techniques down. From there, you can move to foil and sabre with right-of-way and a smaller target area.

I fenced for 2 years, loved epee and was just getting started on sabre. I didn't care for foil, between right-of-way, torso targetting and the strip, it got to be too restrictive. Epee was more free flow, it didn't depend on who was the quicker lunge and you actually had to think about defense when you attacked.

I would've loved to have sabre without right-of-way. More area to move in and the same epee targetting, IIRC.

They will probably start you with foil. If its a general fencing class you will most likely be exposed to all 3 styles...and it will help you to see which style you feel more comfortable with.

Well the lady mentioned how heavy the sword was, and I have done some research knowing that that foil is pretty light, so I'm guessing Epee. I doubt they start off on sabres, but that I do not know

A may be able to help

I have been fencing for about 5 years. Last year I took 3rd in epee at divisionals. If you have any questions let me know. If you tell me where you are located I could probably hook you up with a club. Oh yeah, make sure you DON'T start out in epee. Any club or team worth anything will start you out in Foil running through the basics.

Yup, I'm starting out in the French Grip Foil. I do want to go into Epee after I master all the footwork and stuff. I like the sounds of Epee rules better.

Take your time with Foil. You will have a lot more fun with the other weapons and less frustration. Your mindset has to be different with each one. If you are looking for equipement try ... thefencingpost.com.
Fencing.net should be able to answer all of your questions as well as link you to anything and everything you could possibly need or want. Uhlman is a safe bet IMO.

Fencing doesn't interest me that much.

I'm waiting for Professors Yoda and Darth Maul to start their "Advanced Lightsaber Technique" class
