Uhhhh.....he didn't write it to end wars on earth

Tolkien was a liguist that made up a language (elvish). Being a linguist, he had been taught that a language isn't a language unless it stems from a culture. He made up his own culture! Thus we habe The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and some other book I've never ead having to do with the men coming to middle earth from Numenor. THe men apparently used to be the most powerful race, but lost it because they are so easily corrupted.

Tolkien wrote letters to C. S. Lewis (Lewis wrote many good books including the Narnia series. Tolkien and Lewis would critique each other's books as they wrote them!) stating that he wanted his book to exemplify "certain Biblical truths". He did not, however, write it to be an allegory or anything.

So you see, Tolkien wrote the books for three reasons:

        A. He needed to back his language with culture
        B. He wanted his writings to instill Biblical idea's in the reader
        C. He wanted to sell his books, entertain people, and I'm sure that he didn't mind the money

I thought it was better than the first because they fianlly got around to making everybody feel hopeless In the books, you can feel impending doom immediately. The first movie shows a band of guys killing orcs like it is easy as pie! Only the last 10 minutes shown anything go seriously wrong!
-For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philipians 1:21

-Don't try to use your fancy smancy "logic" on me! It won't work!

-It is better to stay silent, and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

So basically his "certain Biblical truths" would state that we all get along. I didn't state he wrote them to end wars. Maybe he did it to instill ideals in people to prevent them.

Talk about waste of time Harry Potter 1 & 2. Where did my $18 go? Potter didn't catch my interest at all.

How on earth can you fall asleep in an action packed movie. The opening sequence alone got my blood flowing quickly. One of the best first ten minutes of any movie. Oh and Dumb and Dumberer won't be funny unless Carey and the other guy are in it. T3 looks ok but I hope it doesn't give the other Terminator movies a bad image. They didn't have the Xmen 2 trailer on the showing I went to. Heard it looks good though.

It WILL NOT have Jim Carey/etc

Coming from a huge Tolkien fan, seeing this movie was so awsome. However, I did not enjoy it as much as the first and I think it will be the least entertaining of the trilogy. Certain parts of the movie we boring, such as the ents-they could have at least gone into more detail and made them a bigger part of the overall story instead of having little 30 second showings during parts of Helms Deep. But parts such as Gollum and Smeagels (sp) struggle and Helms Deep cough*LEGOLAS*cough made up for some of the lesser parts. However one thing that seriously bugged me was the ending, they cut off so much, they left out Shelob and Gandalf and Theoden riding to Isengard to have a little "chat" with Sauraman. However the ending sort of made sense to me after I got to thinking. The third installment was the shortest, story wise, half the book is the appendicies so they need more from the two towers to make it the length it needed to be....all in all as a Tolkien fan I'd give it a 7.5, as a movie guy i'd give it a 9...

I haven't read the books in ages, but i thought Gimli got wasted at Helm's Deep? I saw the movie and he survived.

Is there another huge castle siege where he checks out or is my memory messed up.

I read all 4 back to back (Hobbit included) and it was about 5 years ago. My memory might be clouded.

Dude, Gimli lives through all the books, he doesn't die. His rivalry with Legolas in the books over their number of kills is a great part throughout the trilogy I love how they included it in the movies.

Maybe you are thinking of Thorin from The Hobbit?

I hate that they didn't include Legolas' awe of Fangor forest and Gimli's of the caves of Helms Deep. And how they were going to give eachother tours after the war.

What happens is that Gimli is lost in the explosion that rips open the wall. Legolas goes looking for him, but cant find him. Eventually the group is reunited at the end of the battle.

Also, my thought exactly on the leaving out of Shelob and the journey to Isengard after the battle of helmsdeep. These parts should make up the start of Movie III.

The only part left out that I wish was in the movie was at the battle of helmsdeep when they have routed the enemy they run into a forest which "Wasnt there before" and their bodies were never seen from again ... I would have liked to have seen that done in the movie.

Yeah! That gave me chills reading it. I have a feeling that it will be in the extendend version. They seemed to emphisize the desolate plain in front of Helms Deep more than nessasary. One can only hope

Thanks for clearing that up guys. I wasn't sure if Gimli died or not. I meant to re-read the series before the movies came out but i've been tied up with other books. Like i said, i read them LONG ago and my memory was very clouded.

I do remember Thorin getting it in the Hobbit, i must have gotten Gimli confused with him, or someone else who checked out at Helm's Deep.

I should lay off those hard drugs!!!
