I was thinking the same thing. Its not the best comparison of a single marijuana joint to a single cigarette. People who smoke cigarettes usually smoke many throughout the day.

While marijuana smoke may or may not contain more carcinogens....a cigarette smoker is definately going to be inhaling a greater volume of smoke (over time) compared to a marijuana smoker...

We weren't talking about crack, or speeding, or firing a gun into a crowd of people

Obviously I agree that there has to be laws. I think our main difference is I think the line where the government has to step in to protect the people around you is much farther down the road. To go directly on topic, I dont see how marijuana warrents (federal) government interaction.

Smoking pot, eating fast food, making crappy investments (as long as no deception is involved), driving your car off a cliff, and many more things I can't list that are not so severe. Let people make decisions and make mistakes. Its cheaper, and they learn something.

No I dont have kids. I've made a choice to finish college first (and hopefully be making a good income too ). Perhaps if I start to view our country as 280 million children who, if left on their own, would spiral into chaos, I could agree that they need to be herded and taught and cared for. Thats certainly the way our government has treated it's people for the last 80 years or so.

I do believe that the vast majority of people understand how to make good choices, and those that don't (if they were allowed) would quickly learn, or remove themselves from the population.

See, there you go! It is about where YOU think the line should be, not that there SHOULD be a line at all. And that is different than what you just posted. And so your argument is not that the government should not get involved, but WHEN, and that is a totally different argument and topic of discussion. You feel it should not get involved when it comes to marijuana, and I disagree. But as it stands, as has been stated time and again, it is still illegal to possess, sell, and smoke marijuana.
