I told a friend up here in NY about how my dad's partner was watching the re entering of the space ship and was taking pictures when the tragidgy occured. His name is Scott Lieberman and my friend said that his picture was on the frontpage of the Rochester, NY Newspaper. I hear it was on many others too. http://www.tylerpaper.com/site/news....d=509709&rfi=6

Some info for everyone, this is an email I got. Not sure if it went to press release yet or not.

      From: hq.nasa.gov

Subject: STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILIES OF SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA

      > STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILIES OF SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA
      >
      > On January 16th, we saw our loved ones launch into a > brilliant, cloud-free > sky. Their hearts were full of >enthusiasm, pride in country, faith in their God, and a >willingness to accept risk in the pursuit of knowledge --- >knowledge that might improve the quality of life for all >mankind. Columbia's 16-day mission of scientific discovery >was a great success, cut short by mere minutes ---- yet it
      > will live on forever in our memories. We want to thank >the NASA family and people from around the world for their >incredible outpouring of love and support. Although we >grieve deeply, as do the families of Apollo 1 and >Challenger before us, the bold exploration of space must >go on. Once the root cause of this tragedy is found and >corrected, the legacy of Columbia must carry on --- for the
      >benefit of our children and yours.

idk what everyone knows or has been told but here is the laterst info that i have recieved, forgive me if im repeating anybody else.

the launch was a perfect one on a beatiful jan florida day. engineers going over the tapes of the launch in ultra slow motion look for any potential problems (this is done for every launch) they cant find ANY thing that went wrong except a piece of insulation falls off of the large gas tank (this happens quite often, the gas in the tank must be kept VERY cold and druring lift off it is not uncommon for the shuttle to get hit by ice and insulation) and hits the left wing the engineers with nothing else to look at look at the impact over and over. they decide nothing was damaged so to the tiles, even it there was there was nothing the crew could do to fix the tiles in space. so the launch is conssidered a complete success. all the in space type things go well and they head back after the alotted time they were up there. in every reentry there is about 10 secs where hot plasma is built up on the tiles of the shuttle and it blocks any radio transmissions they make it through this but then nasa calls in telling them that the left gear box has risin 60 degrees in temp (it did so in 5 or so mins) do they understand or somthing to that effect. the crew replies roger.... then nothing. the shuttle starts to break up.

NASA thinks that what cause the break up was the gear box coming open cause a lot of wind resistance on the left side which kept pulling the craft to the left on re enrty the flaps were deployed more on this flight than any other to compinsate for this. the gear box not top or lid or w/e not being able withstand the torement breaks off tearing sensors and wires along with it soon after more and more of the shuttle breaks up and the rest is history

as of now they are looking for parts (the shuttles and human parts) all of which is being taking to Barksdale AFB in bossier LA (which is a 5 min drive frm Shreveport where i live) there has been human flesh found over here in my city a little piece the size of a quarter was found in a best buy parking lot. nothing else has been found here most of it is in east TX but not all of it has fallen yet

i hope this wasnt reapeating anything and was in formative

Interesting reading about how & why this sort of thing can happen. Budget cuts, old tech etc. We all think that this stuff (space shuttle) is state of the art.

The shuttle is old and expensive,Nasa needs to start from scratch again.

from all in Australia, may they rest in peace.

My friend told me today his grandparents found parts of the ship in their yard (in N.Texas). They called the authroties and they marked the scenen he said. He said the parts were about as big as a school chair.

I know this is disturbing, but how is it possible? They have confirmed that they have found a human leg, from the hip to heel in somebody's yard (I THINK it was their yard), all scortched. Like I said, how is it possible?

                prayers

My heart and prayers go out to those in the shuttle and their love ones who are now suffering. May they rest in peace.

Did anyone hear about what some people were doing on ebay. Trying to make a fortune auctioning off some of the debris. What a SHAME! Luckily ebay caught it in time to cancel them. They should be put away. What are your thoughts?

Brought this back up for a copy of the latest picture that the Military (Air Force observatory) caught of the Shuttle over California that they are analizing. It doesn't look like much but there is some indication that the streak of black under the left wing is something going on.

                  Shuttle re-entry Picture here

And here is a release of the sequence of sensor failures and locations in a nice PDF diagram:

                  Sensor PDF here

Thought these might be of interest. They are all that has been released. I think they have more but are not releasing the more detailed versions as its classified stuff. This stuff is FOI and cleared for release.

And one Fella on another site took that first photo and shopped it up some so you could see it better. We do know that the released photo above and this version are far less refined than the ones NASA is studying.
