    thinking of getting a trumpet

i used to play trumpet/trombone back in the day in elementary school, and i was thinking about picking up the trumpet again. i want to buy one, but have no clue what to look for. i will probably be playing mostly ska, and maybe the school band. the only catch is, im on a very low budget. any suggestions?

Brings back memories of when I used to play the ole trumpet in middle school. Only played 3 years, then gave it up. Still have mine as a matter of fact.

As for getting a trumpet, look around at different music shops seeing what they offer. Either look at renting one, or buying a used one possibly. The shop I got mine from offered to give me half back of what I paid for if I returned the instrument when I was done with it after so many years (never did though). Ask you parents too, I'm sure they'd help you or buy it, after all it's for something for school and such.

Used/old would be the way to go if you want to go cheap. You can get some pretty cool trumpets if you keep your eyes open.

I've got a silver/brass (rough silver outside, brass inside) trumpet from the Ohio Band Company made in the early 1920's. It's slimmer than most modern trumpets, and very unique. (The 2nd chair trumpet player from the St. Louis Symphony offered to buy it from me back in High School.) It was my grandfathers. I don't have the original case anymore, but it was make out of alligator skin.

Look for used mutes, too. You can often find ones that sound different than their modern equivalent.

And no, I won't sell my trumpet to you.

              Get a Bach

If you want something cheap then get a Yamaha

The Bach has a nicer tone though...

Been playing Trumpet for 8 yrs and counting... Bach is perfect for Ska! but... it's expensive, check out Ebay

for ska i would suggest a trombone... but youve probably already thought of that. i didnt really like the trumpet, i played it for a few years.

*EDIT* starting a ska band sounds really cool good luck!

Look into getting a Yamaha or a used trumpet at a pawn shop or at your music store. Personally, E-bay is hit or miss, the quality you get from a cheap trumpet may not be worth the trouble. I got luck with ebay and got a cheap POS trumpet for 75 bucks. The Yamaha will probably cost your about 125 and up.

I currently play for the Penn Band (a scramble band and a pep band) I got the POS trumpet so I wouldn't mess up my Bach (since those are really expensive). Good Luck, Good Playing.

ah trumpet. I played the trumpet for quite a few years. Of course i stopped but it takes me back... I was in our school's symphonic band. If you played a trumpet in the symphonic band, the school would provide these really cool, really nice Bach cornets for us to use. But anways, i had this really cheap Lark trumpet. It looked pretty spiffy from its silver coating but the price was way down there. If you want, i could sell you mine if you dont mind having a used trumpet. Other wise i would look on ebay.
