OK here is something that should clear up the whole 56K-lag-the-server deal. If you care, read carefully
I'm in Health right now so I have nothing better to do than boil in anger as I think about how many servers kick people for using 56K...
OK here you have to read this to get a better understanding first. I am on 56K, and I use AIM to communicate with people in the CS clan. One time a buddy of mine left a direct connection open so I decieded to lag him down by sending him HUGE bitmap files while he played. To my dismay this didn't work. Guess how? He was on broadband internet, and I was only sending him data at around 1.2 KB/Second, therefore his connection could EASILY EASILY compensate for it.
Now. Think, a high ping comes from data transfers. Not from processor speed, not from RAM that is free. It comes from your data transfer rate to the server. Now, take the AIM incident for example. If I cant upload very fast, and I am getting a 350-300 ping, it makes sense. But I would not be lagging anyone, simnply because the server will adress the other player's bandwidth more so than mine.
If you put some thought into that, you can see what I am saying. It is usually the person with the LOWEST ping the lags the server. That is why when you enter a huge 32 player server on 56K you will lag out. Because everyone would be sucking up your bandwidth. Others like to think of it the other way around. But it is true, me sucking out 5 KB/Second from the server as opposed to you sucking out 128 KB/Second from the server. Who is wearing the server down? If the srever can't send you the data fast enough, then it is the server's problem that it cant handle a simple 5KB/Second upload. However if you cannot RECIEVE it fast enough, it will lag YOU and not the SERVER.
