You need to open up the case and look for IDE0 and IDE1, easily identified with a long grey ribbon cable. For each IDE channel, you can have 2 IDE devices for a total of 4 IDE devices. Check each cable to see if there is anything attached to it. If there is only one HD attached to IDE0, you can install a new HD on it. Based on the age of your pc, I assume that you have a DVDROM. That should be attached to IDE1. Reason being because dvd/cdroms has a slower access rate and an IDE channel works on the slowest IDE device. That's why you should never put a CDROM with a HD. It will slow down the access speed for the HD.

Edit: If you have firewire(IEEE1394), you can have an external HD.

THAT COMPUTER DESERVES TO BURN IN HELL JUST LIKE MY 100MHZ DELL POS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMFG I HATE OLD, SLOW, POS COMPUTERS

        argh!!!! i HATE them

i plan to use my old dell as my summer paintball target in my back yard...green marbs flying at it around 17bps @ 290fps

just get a new one, and DO NOT get a stupid name-brand like DELL, IBM, or HP, they are all hi-tech computers crammed into a tiny aluminum box with 2 fans, i get custom made ones from my dad's friend, and they are built VERY well and are very afforadble, and he will not give you anything that you dont need (like dell does for ghey gimmicks)

i have a 733 pentuim 3 in my custom one and its still running strong

        48x24x48x cd burner
        733 p3
        512 RAM
        ge force mx 2
and more... for only $830 2 years ago, and still running strong!
