    Are the Simpsons waning?

    Recently(past several months), I have noticed that one of my favorite tv shows, The Simpsons, is changing. Unfortunatly, I believe this change is not only for the worse, but also this change could be fatal. As some may noticed, the quality of the writing has dropped. Alot of my friends agree, but not in the same way. Their excuse is that Matt Groening has been doing this for almost a decade and he is running out of ideas. Not so I say. The show has always been a fairly realistic show, with the occasional off the wall story(Astronaut Homer, the halloween episodes, etc). The newer story lines are taking more to the off the wall story style, which IMO, is perfectly fine. My problem is that it no longer has the same edge it did. For instance, in the episode where the family goes to Brazil, the last scene features bart being eaten by an Anaconda. That screeched by barely, but is fine, if it had been left at that. Instead, the writers chose to have Bart respond with some inane comment about Carnival(SP?). The thing that made the show funny originally was the wide open humor. There didn't have to be a word spoken, it could be simply an awkward silence. Next example, In a more recent episode, Homer accidently switches "mixes" with Maggie(Homers mix was a romance mix, and maggies as a baby mix). When he turns on his mix for marge, he realizes his folley and the scene goes to Maggies crib with Maggie dancing to the romance mix. This is everything the simpsons originaly tried not to be.
    The show was based on a premise of putting the family and friends through adventures and the entertainent was from how they reacted. Homer was stupid. Marge was worried. Bart was mischevious(and stupid). Lisa was smart and complained. Maggie was just a baby. Everybody was a relatively realistic type character. They responded to situations the same way a normal person would react, but a dash of comedy was thrown in. Today though, these attributes are blown wide open. Homer is depicted as so stupid it is surprising that a crayon is the only reason. Marge is just ridiculous all together. Bart is now some generic comic relief character who could be placed in any tv show without really altering the story. And Maggie, she is supposed to be a baby, but somehow she has more character than some of the other members of the house.
    The reason the show was so funny was because the responses were somewhat real, even if the story wasn't. Characters were unique. Now, the writing is so generic and unlifelike that it isn't funny.

    I'm sorry, but I am losing faith in the show. I used to get mad if I missed the Simpsons on Sunday night. Now I don't care because I know the humor is so generic that if I miss an episode of the Simpsons, I can just put it on Friends or something stupid like that and hear the same jokes.

    I digress.

        Show has been on the downward trend for a few years now. I stop watching the new ones really unless I find nothing else on, I'm just not thrilled like I used to be with it. I just watch the old ones now. They show two repeats a day here where I live, so I usually just stick with those.

            The simpsons were in their prime in about the 6 and 7th season I think. It's been going downhill since about the 10th I think. I believe they got a new writer and thats what caused it to go down hill. Supposedly, when they hired him, he had never even seen the simpsons. I read that on msnbc I think. I'll try to dig up the article. I do agree though, the simpsons have been 'lacking' lately. I still never miss a new episode though. I'm almost done watching the entire south park series in order, and I'm gonna start working on the simpsons next. Yes I have a ton of free time.

                see the simpsons is a cartoon now with far fetched sketches and impossible acts, before it was a sitcom where physics still applied...i still love it though

                  I sadly 100% agree...however the newest episode were homer takes over the plant made me laugh out loud several times...it was absoultely great. However, I do agree when you say that something funny will happen, then they will SAY something ridiculously NOT funny and ruin the whole thing.

                    You have to admit that lately they have gotten more bolder with the material also ... for instance;

                    1) Episode where Marge accidently gets implants ... they were pretty blatent about those.

                    2) In one episode Marge and the one divorced housewife (with the red spotted head wrap) talk about steroids and their benefits ... which then gets Marge taking steroids.

                    3) In that same episode Marge on a roid surge grabs the kids school bus and causes it to stop ... at which point Otto (Who was always alluded to as a pot head, but never just came out and said it) says "Whoa, what am I smoking ... oh yeah pot" ... and holds up a joint at the same time ...

                    While yes some of the shows have not been as good as the earlier ones, they have become allot more edgy and out-right in their humor then they have been before.

                        It is no longer a show with a generally funny theme throughout, but a series of funny one liners after the other.

                        Sure...I still laugh out loud, probally even more than I used to, but at the end of the show I always feel a bit dissatisfied.

                        I agree completely that the downfall of the show is the off the wall story lines. They need to take it back down to the "normal disfunctional family" level.

                            i know the total plot of the show has swapped. some of the episodes are ridiculous. but the show still is the funniest show on tv. i have watched the show my whole life. i have almost all of the episodes on tape, if i ever get bored i just pop a random one in and am enertained for hours. i love the simpsons. the fact that they can mock themselves and their network is hillarious. if the simpsons goes off the air, i will probably be depressed for many years.(if it goes off because of the ratings/if they retire i understand)
