PC---------> Mac?

I was thinking about making a new computer for myself, because my family's 3 year old isn't cutting it for me anymore. I was gonna make another PC and put W98 on it, but now I'm thinking about getting a Mac.

I don't know much about Macs, but I heard the Jaguar OS is really nice, and stable, so I was thinking about that. Is there a good way to relate performance between PC-Mac? I'm just looking for some general information here.

Also, my MP3 player has a port for USB 2.0, but not for FireWire. Would that be a problem?

USB is standard on all Mac's no problems there. If you do not play games and want a nice stable computer that a fairly quick I'd go with the mac. If you play games then go for a Wintel.

Yea basically the same as above. If you are going to be editing pictures, movies, and music go Mac. If you like games go PC I don't think games exist on Macs

To be honest there are some games like DII and soon EQ which have been ported. Honestly though if you want games on any level go PC.

Really depends on what kinda software you want to run... Getting a PC is usually the "safer" bet though...

Macs work great... I'll buy one someday. OS X rocks!

We have both a mac and several nice pcs (and tons of crap ones). Having both is REAL nice, best of both worlds combined. The mac is a very nice media center

I have a Mac and they are fantastic. I'd buy one anyday over a PC, but the best situation is to have both if you can manage it. Since the business world works more on PC, and games are easier to find for PC's, it's good to have one. But, Mac's OS and multimedia capabilities are awesome. Plus, their design and aesthetics are unmatched in the computer world IMO. Enjoy.

High-End Macs are a bit slower than High-End PC's not by a huge amount, but slower the same. For me, it's plenty fast enough to do what I need it to do. And yes, I don't play FPS games. Word, Excel and an Internet Browser work plenty fast.

The Mac OS X however is wonderful thing. The greatest part about it is I don't have to mess with it. It just works and does what you want. Why is this important to me? I'm a IT guy, I work of Solaris and NT/XP/2000 computers for a living. I don't want to come home and do more work. Ever. I've a wife and kid that beat on my Macs while I'm at work, I don't want to get a phone call from my wife saying the computer is broken, or something doesn't work.

Standard Home Use -- Gaming -- Go with a PC

Graphics Design/Rendering or Audio Creation (I'm talking higher end, not standard stuff) then go with a MAC

Dont put Win98 on that, put WinXP Professional on it ... with SP1 its very stable since its built off the Win2K core, and its very game friendly and program friendly once you have the service pack installed.

well, for me, Macs are the way to go.

the newer ones are very fast, OS 10.2 (Jaguar) is a really stable system, and the computers are just dang sexy. I have a tower and a powerbook. Don't buy into hype though, it's like getting a gun, no one can tell you which is better.
Although i see it as a Mags (Macs) vs. Autococker (PCs) thing. Each does the job, macs do it simpler and I think easier, but of course you can "tune" the top end PC to be a little faster.

But i will certainly say that if your main thing is gaming, go with the PC. (or just get an Xbox for games)

first off a Mac is a PC(Personal Computer) but is not IBM compatible. If you want to play games go with a IBM compatible and if you want to make games go with the MAC.

I won't be doing many multimedia editing things, except basic photoediting. Games are nice, but I don't play a whole bunch of them, and I don't do many games on-line (56k, ewwwwww). It sounds like I'll still go IBM compatible(just for Dye guy).

I've heard you should have minimum 512 Mb RAM for NT, and I was planning on putting just 256 Mb DDR Ram, and using 98SE. Would NT still run alright with 256, and is it pretty stable (I don't have much experience with it)?
