Let's just say that the story line is SO complex that it will be interesting to see how they pull it off.

Jason Striker in the comics was not the same mutant you saw in the movie. Honestly for the life of me I cant remember what the comic version Jason Strykers' power was. But im certain that he wasnt the "Jason 143" character that they have in this movie.

Xavier never did the nifty enmass time pause thing but I see no reason why he could not with the other nifty stuff he can do.

Cables real name (had to cheat and look up the details of this) is Nate Summers. He is the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor,a clone of Jean Grey (Long story I dont remember).

heres a pretty simplified version of what happens with phoenix (highlight below to read)
<Font color="#F5F5F5">Jean and the other xmen were abducted by Steven Lang's Sentinels to Lang's orbiting space. After defeating Lang the xmen had to escape back to Earth in a space shuttle through a lethal solar radiation storm. The pilot's cabin lacked sufficient shielding against radiation, but Jean insisted on piloting the craft herself. While she was dying from radiation poisoning, the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force appeared to Jean. The Phoenix Force created a body for itself that was identical to Jean's, duplicated her memories and personality, and absorbed a portion of her consciousness. It then guided the xmen's shuttle to a crash landing in Jamaica Bay off New York City. The Phoenix Force also cast the real Jean into suspended animation within a strange pod that rested on the bottom of Jamaica Bay while slowly healing her. Under the name Phoenix the cosmic being joined the xmen, who believed it was the real Jean. Months later the xmen's foe Mastermind began mentally manipulating Phoenix's mind, ultimately brainwashing her into becoming the Black Queen of the sinister Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. In the process he inadvertently caused Phoenix to turn insane, becoming Dark Phoenix, a danger to the entire cosmos. Ultimately, the portion of Jean's consciousness within Phoenix resurfaced and caused Phoenix to commit suicide rather than wreak further destruction. Upon the death of the Phoenix Force's physical body, the portion of Jean's consciousness it had absorbed returned to Earth and ultimately was reabsorbed by Jean. Eventually the Avengers found the pod in Jamaica Bay and turned it over to the Fantastic Four for study. The real Jean Grey then released herself from the pod, fully healed. She was reunited with Scott and the other original members of the xmen, and together they founded a new team, the original x-factor. Later, after Professor Xavier returned from a long sojourn in space with the Starjammers, Jean and the other members of x-factor rejoined the xmen. While Jean had been in suspended animation Scott had married Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean created by Mister Sinister. Eventually Pryor went mad, developed vast powers, and died in combat with Jean. Some years later, Scott finally married the real Jean Grey. During their honeymoon, however, their spirits were transported two millennia into an alternate future and were placed in new bodies by the Askani cult. Their leader, Rachel Summers, the daughter of the Scott and Jean of an alternate reality, had also served in the xmen under the name Phoenix. As Slym and Redd, Scott and Jean spent years in that future time, raising Nathan, the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, who had earlier been brought to the future. Eventually Scott and Jean returned to their own time and bodies, leaving Nathan in the future to become the heroic warrior Cable. In Rachel's honor Jean adopted the name Phoenix when she returned to the xmen. <font>

One of the problems with comic book reality is the writers have to come up with an issue every month. Hence each writer ends up totally changing what the previous writer did before and we get these convoluted story lines. I mean imagine the psychological effect it would have on Scott to have Jean "die", then get married to Madeline Pryor, then have the real Jean come back, then have Madeline Pryor die in a battle with Jean. Kind of makes it impossible to have a normal healthy marriage after that!:)

That was, however, a good movie and a credit to the X-men franchise. Good acting, good story line, good characters......if you like "fun" movies at all see it.

I love all these Marvel movies coming out now, my daughter is getting into the X-men cartoons and movies and it gives me the chance to pull out all my old comics and let her look at them (hey, if it gets her to read, party!)
                Ok I like it also

The Pheonix Saga from the Cartoon show is the cooler of the two, IMO.

In the comics, it is Jason Wynguard- aka Mastermind.

And Yes, Cable's name is Nathan Summers. Also known as Nathan Dayspring. (Where I got my SN from.)

Yeah, dayspring beleave it or not i was gonna say that he was mastermind... but my friends got in a dissusion about that villian. anyhow we basicly all left it as a moot point when we saw the Magneto comic with Mastermind as a robot cpu thing and not a human.

anyhow after diggin up my phoenix saga comics I see the Jason Wynguard as Mastermind going toe to toe with Phoenix. Comic continuity can be such a pain at times cant it?

In anycase, I donated another $8.50 to see this fantasitic movie again and have to say im very happy with this story line. As a comic book geek I approve of this elseworld rendition of our favorite characters and hope to see more of it in the future.

I thought Magneto's escape was pretty well done. You figured it would be the old Mystique (or as my wife calls her "blue gal" disguise escape but they chose a pretty creative way for him to escape.

In an action/fantasy movie it is the little things that count. So often directors rely on special effects to sell the story to us but so far the X-men franchise has shown it is willing to put that little bit extra in the movies to make it enjoyable...

My only complaint is that there was not enough Ian McKellen. Magneto is awesome. I loved they way he took care of the soldiers guarding the hallway. Much more death and destruction in this movie

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
