Handgun Legalities...

Im looking to buy my second handgun. The first one I got was bought by my dad, and I took hunter safety and all that. But now I think its time for a new one.

1. Im pretty sure its illegal for me to find someone online, send him cash, and he sends me the gun UPS or something...That is illegal right?!? And if so exactly HOW illegal

2. And now, what is the LEGAL way to do it? If its a big hassle to legally purchase a handgun and have it registered to me and all that im going with option number one.

for a gun to cross state lines it has to be sent to a dealer first. and they gotta do the back ground check and stuff still, all i know is its gotta go to a dealer.

ordering a gun like that can get costy if you dont know anyone... Localy here in Phoenix ive seen FFL transfer charges as high as 135 bucks.

Its normally easier to shop gunshops and shows, let them know what your looking for and due to the principals of supply and demand they tend to get in what they know are gonna sell.

A "dealer" doesn't have to mean a store. Dealers are anyone with a licence to sell.

can they really prove if I dont recieve it through a dealer? That sounds expensive and I dont plan on shooting anybody so its not gunna bother me the slightest to get the gun illegally. Illegally and cheaper seem to be working together on this one.

Purchase the gun legally. Dont even think about buying one any other way. Go ask the chief of police in your town how to do it right. Get your federal firearms card first.

From what I get out of it, you must go through a fully licensed California firearms dealer. Here's a clip from the FAQ.

I want to sell a gun to another person, i.e., a private party transfer. Am I required to conduct the transaction through a licensed California firearms dealer?

Yes. Firearm sales must be conducted through a fully licensed California firearms dealer. Failure to do so is a violation of California law. The buyer (and seller, in the event that the buyer is denied), must meet the normal firearm purchase and delivery requirements. "Antique firearms," as defined in Section 921(a)(16) of Title 18 of the United States Code, and curio or relic rifles/shotguns, defined in Section 178.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations that are over 50 years old, are exempt from this requirement.

Firearms dealers are required to process private party transfers upon request. Firearms dealers may charge a fee not to exceed $10 per firearm for conducting a private party transfer. Example:
a. For a private party transfer involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $30.00 for the first handgun and $26.00 for each additional handgun involved in the same transaction
b. For private party transfers involving one or more long guns, or a private party transfer involving one handgun and one or more long guns, the total allowable fees, including the DROS, safety, and dealer transfer fees, are not to exceed $30.00. The dealer may charge an additional dealer-service fee of $10.00 per each additional firearm transferred.

In Feb. I won a 9mm on a gun auction site. I sent the money to the seller. I contacted a local dealer with a FFL and had him send a copy of his FFL to the seller. The seller sent to gun to the FFL holder and when he recieved the gun I had to go through a background check and once that was over I got me gun. All it cost me was $25 for paperwork. Real easy and the best part was it costed 150 total for gun, shipping and paperwork!!

Right now they are trying to pass a law banning .50 caliber rifles.
