    Careers...

I am a sophomore in highschool and I still don't know what I want to do the rest of my life, so I am wondering what some of you AO members do? I see people with like 3-10 $1000 markers and you still have enough money to buy new cars and stuff, and I'm wondering what the heck are you guys doing to afford this stuff. So any of you adults out there, what jobs do you do and what kind of training did you have to do to get there? And I don't want to hear about you guys that work at taco bell...
You smell like dookie... No really though.

well, im just going into college next fall, but i can give you some advice. do very well all through high school and get into a good college. also make sure you do some extra curicular activities like sports and student government, because a 4.0 gpa is good but you have to be an all around good student.

I'm almost 25 and still don't know what I wanna do. I work 2 jobs, can fix about anything on a car, know a substancial bit about computers and networking. Tough myself to fiberglass a few summers ago, so I can fix hottubes etc. I've worked on and off for iowa reality making fliars for different houses. I've finished a few basements done a few roofing jobs, went to school for tool n die so I know how to use mills, lathes and such. Went to school in austria for metal work, so I know how to weld with a few different welders including aluminum welder and can black smith.

I'm almost 25 and still don't know what I wanna do.

Heat, i'm a junior in highschool but i'm thinking i'll be following the same path as you.

I know more about fixin cars than anyone else in my school. I know a lot about general carpentry, i can do minor welding, all that sorta stuff.

My problem is that school is too damn boring for me. Getting good grades is easy, but i hate doing homework, and hate to study, a lot of times i sleep in class. I can, and have, easily gone from a D- quarter average to an A-.

I was thinking a lot about this earlier..

My goal in life would be to own my own business, because i don't like working under someone. If i could save up money for long enough to have a car dealership, performance parts dealership, anything automotive, i would be very happy.

It's hard makin decisions... see your guidance counselor at school, they can give you a lot of good ideas.

ok im not trying to be a recruiter here but join the military for just one term, i think thats 4 years active duty service then another 4 where they can call you up if they need you. it will get you job experience pay for college and the only things you have to pay for if you live on base is your car note, insurance, food and a few other non essential things (basicaly im saying youll have some expendable income) 4 years isnt a long time just think how fast high school has gone, im starting my 3rd year and it just seems like yesterday i was sitting in a middle school

I load bombs for the USAF.... and cant beleive I get paid as much as I do to do the amount of work that I actually do day to day.

Military is not for everyone ... but if you can keep your nose clean and fly right for 8ish years I recommend it. After all they let ME play with missiles bombs and Gatling Guns all day...and then pay me for it! what can be cooler than that?

                  Find out for yourself!

Find out for yourself. Never let anyone talk you into a career. You may regret it for your entire life.

I backed into my career. I was working part time at a little bank for beer money while at the University of Maryland. I graduated with a Poly Sci degree and still had no idea what I wanted to do. The bank offered me a full time job in their Private Banking division and now I am a VP in the Middle Market ($10mm to $100mm size loans) in a very large bank. I like it and it has allowed my family and myself to enjoy a very comfortable life style. But I found it on my own. I have a good friend whose parents pushed him to be a lawyer. After MD, he went to the University of Texas law school. He works for a tier 1 law firm in DC now. He makes a boatload of money, a little more then twice what I make, but has no life. Whenever we get together, he is always bemoaning his lack of a social life. Yes he has a big bank account, nice condo in Bethesda, and Dodge Viper, but no long term relationships. His job is his life. I have a family, home, beach house, and plenty of toys. He may make over $250k a year, but who has the better "life"?

Again, no one can tell you the right job for you! You have to find your own way. You have free will use it! Live your own life and not anyone elses! Good luck!

I'm in the 9th grade and plan on becoming a judge. I get good grades without much effort at all. I rarely study, and have a 93% average. I'm in student council, just got elected for a second term during sophmore year, and might run for class president for junior year.I plan on going to a very good college, then going to law school. I'll be a lawyer for a few years (Illinois Bar Association recommends 10 years as a lawyer before running for judge) and then run for either city, state, or county circuit court judge. Might run for appelate a few years after that, and I'm not sure what I'll do after that. Judges (circuit court) have gone from about $80,000 a year in 96, to over $120,000 now(I'm not 100% sure bout those salaries, but its pretty close). I hope my career pans out as planned, but realize that there is a high probability of something unexpected ruining my plans.

If you get good grades easily you're doing something wrong.
"What we have to accomplish at this time is all the more clear: relentless criticism of all existing conditions, relentless in the sense that the criticism is not afraid of its findings and just as little afraid of the conflict with the powers that be."

                              Money isn't everything

Your career shouldn't be based on money alone. Its funny, I make more money every year. But some how I always end up with more bills also. More responsibility makes me sometimes wish I was just a kid agian.(I'm not that old though)YOu should definately be happy with what you're doing. Figure out if you like to work with your hands or if you like to wear a suit and tie every day to work and sit in an office. Pushing papers or fixing things or building stuff. Dealing with people or working alone. Lots of different ways to go. You probably won't know until something really interests you or like 1stdeadeye, you just back into it.
