Being a athlete and all.. I have a little advice on this sort of thing:

    Don't be a vegetarian.

Oh and if you are really serious about it....

Take protien supplements. You can't get enough protien to build/repair muscle tissue from greens alone. So unless you want to be a little weak person all you life, either A) eat meat or B) take supplements to make up for what you dont get from plants.

      oh good god...

I'm a vegetarian. I'm here to help other vegetarians/people interested in it. I'm an athlete. I was 4th in my class for cross country, 3rd for pole vault, 2nd for 400 and 3rd for 800. Please don't tell me what to and what not to do. I am in perfect health and strong, plus everything you said is false. I eat only greens and my doctor and I both agree that I'm a healthy person.

I would appreciate if you did not post here anymore, unless you are interested in becoming a vegetarian/vegan.

      Thank you, Tony

Well, I'm scrawny already and meat hasn't done squat for me. I'd rather not be some hulk anyway for paintball. However, I will be using a bike for about 90% of my transport in about a month, so I guess I'll have to watch for protein.

I'm considering becoming a vegetarian, so I'm interested in whatever anybody has to share. Especially recipes to avoid having to take supplements other than, say, a multivitamin.

p.s. what happened to the other thread?

            Hehehe, alright!

Yeah, 1 centrum vitamin a day is awesome. As for the protein watching, Soy products are awesome. Tofu, it may look/ sounds gross to some, but it's actually really good. Pick up some teryaki or seshuan(spelling?) at the local store and grills it or pan fry it with some of that stuff, mmmmmmm, good.

Here, cut the tofu into strips big enough to fit into a burger bun. Let the tofu marinate in seshuan or teryaki sauce for a while, then put the tofu on the grill and apply the sauce. Let it cook until it looks good. Flip it here and there. BAM! Put it on a bun with some tomato, lettuce, etc... You got one serious burger.

Another, get some portabello mushrooms, put them on the barbecue. Apply garlic, pepper, whatever you want. Also make a little dish out of some tin foil and cook some shopped up red onion strips in it. Flip the mushroom here and there then put it on a bun with the onion. Mmmmmmm, good stuff.

My brother, The Mauve Calx cooks all this stuff, he's awesome. I'm sure he would love to post some more of his recipes here for you.

The best advice for people who want to eat things that contain protein but do not taste like cardboard is to eat lots of ethnic foods. Mediterranean food (hummus and falafel are incredible if you havent tried them), Italian food, Mexican food, Thai Food - all of these are good sources of protein and have menus that are extremely vegetarian friendly (and vegan friendly too, save for Italian food, in which cheese becomes problematic).

Lots of beginning vegetarians/vegans are grossed out by the concept of soy products - this is understandable. I reccomend that you start with stuff like soy nuts and veggie burgers, and then work your way up to the soymilk, soycheese, and such. Gardenburger original flavor is incredible, I highly reccomend it for starting vegetarians (though it is not vegan, unfortunately).

Any other questions, ask away. Hopefully this thread wont degenerate into a flamewar like the last one did (the first t 6 pages were so good too, alas )

He's right, those veggie burgers are darn tastey.

The best tofue comes in this little plastic tray with a thing plastic sheet over it. It's pretty big, and I think it's got water in it too. But the kind that comes in little cardboard like boxes is bad. It's called silken tofu and it doesn't have the texture that the other kind does.

Good call on a new thread!

Not a vegetarian and no interest in becoming one. That being said, you can definitely make some tasty non-meat dishes.

Tofu fried with a little bit of Teriyaki sauce is good.

In the summer since I live in NJ and am Italian, I eat lots of tomato salad. What I like to do to make it a bit more hearty is add diced silken tofu. Real simple: Tomatos, Red Onion, Garlic, Diced Silken Tofu, Diced mozzerella, Salt, pepper, cilantro, fresh basil, Olive oil, Red Wine vinegar and a splash of balsamic vinegar to taste! Great with a crust baguette! Serve cold! Great on a real hot summer afternoon!

                        Tofu:

For grilling and stir frying, i reccomend extra firm variety.

For mixing into smoothies and making cheesecake, go for silken variety.

A good starter recipe for tofu is this kick *** tofu smoothie recipe (use silken tofu for this, if you can, otherwise get as soft as possible):

                        1/2 cup apple juice
1/2 cup frozen vanilla nonfat yogurt, peach sorbet, or vanilla ice cream
4 ounces (1/2 cup) soft tofu, drained (this is about 1/3 of a standard block)
1 cup fresh or frozen sliced strawberries, peaches, or any sort of fruit you like
                        1 banana, broken into chunks
                        1 teaspoon honey
                        1/2 cup ice cubes
Fresh whole berries for garnish (optional)
                        Directions
                        1. Place the apple juice, sorbet, tofu, strawberries or peaches, banana and honey in a blender. Cover and process until well blended.

                        2. With blender still running, drop ice cubes, one at a time, through the hole in the lid until smooth.

                        3. Pour into tall glasses; garnish with a fresh berries, if desired.

                        Makes 2 -3 servings

This recipe is godly delicious, and is a pretty good protein drink too.

No, not yet. You have to wait for the fresh tomatos. The crap out their now is all hothouse grown. They have NO flavor. That is why this is a summer only dish. You can make it year round, but the flavor is only there in the summer.

Jersey Fresh Tomatos!!! Gotta love them!

These recipes sound good so far.

I haven't tried much tofu as of yet, but I recently tried the McDonalds veggie burger, and I couldn't even finish the thing it was so bad. Please don't tell me that was tofu....

No, that was probably some kind of textured vegetable protein compound. Never trust anything from McDonalds, I've learned
