I just got a 2000 Cherokee. I love the CJ's and Wranglers but they are just a little too small inside for my day-to-day needs. If I ever get a second car for the summer/weekend it's going to be a Wrangler.

My dad owns a wrangler. Its a nice car with lots of extras you can put into it. We have a 99 wrangler. The top comes off easy for the summer and its great for offroading. We road a lot of trails in Colorado while we lived there. Overall its a great car

I have a 95 wrangler. IMHO, the newer ones look too car-ish. They went to IFS in 97...so it rides a little better on the road. Just dont buy a Rubicon. They have all the "extras", but, in the end, it costs WAY more than if you get them yourself.

And whatever you do, DONT LOWER IT!!! Or else, other jeep owners will take turns driving over your rig.

I used to drive an '88 Suzuki Samauri. Man, I miss that car.

It was slow as molasses (could barely hit 55 with the tires that were on it), but in 4wL, I could idle up hills that would challenge other vehicles.

Gotta love an 80 cu. in. engine. lol

Anyways, good luck with your pursuit of a wrangler...those things are sweet.

Oldsoldier, the wranglers didn't go to ifs in 97, they went to coil springs and 4-link, not only does this setup ride better, but it articulates better off road. The new Liberty is ifs, maybe that is what you were thinking of.

Zvaunt, what do you want to do with the wrangler, both long term and short term? This will determine what you want to start with. The Rubicon is pricey, but the upgrades are worth the money, if you plan to actually use them, otherwise, don't bother.

I've got one.. had it for close to a month now. Its a 2001 Jeep Wrangler sport, in navy blue with full doors and a soft top. I have added some stuff on it.. such as fre bigger tires, rims, and fog lights. Havent done a whole lot to it yet. Mine is an automatic, not a 5 speed.

Pros: Most customizable (sp?), fun, sporty, small. Good towing capacity for size, o, and they are convertable .

Cons: slow, bad gas mileage, little get-up-and-go.

All in all I love the car to death.. heres a pic of it.

I have a 93 Wrangler 4.0L and I love it. I looked around at the newer ones and I think they look too much like a Tracker, and yes that is meant to offend Tracker owners. It rides like a brick, but I'm looking into a Skyjacker 2.5 inch suspension lift to go along with the 3 inch body lift already on it. 31x10.50 15 XLT all-terrains (not enough off-road time to warrant MTs).
For those who don't think you can get power out of a Wrangler, you haven't tried hard enough. K&N Airfilter system, Borla headers, Carsound Cat, Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 mufflers. I can hit 0-60 in two gears at a peak RPM of 4000(way below redline) and top out at about 120mph (right before the soft top turns into a parachute)! I highly recommend Wranglers over other "sport utilities" for overall fun value. Try to find an older one that hasn't been put through too many mods. Otherwise, the coil suspension on the new ones are nice, but I couldn't see paying 18-22000 for a new Wrangler with frilly interior that was just going to get dirty anyway. I just got a new 2003 Wrangler Rubicon and I love it. It came stock well prepared for offroading however it could use a decent 3-4inch lift. I really liek the Rubicon but if you don't plan on offroading much I wouldn't suggest it because you are paying for heavy duty parts and the lockers. If you dont't plan on going offroading much get a Sahara or one of the other models.

I would go with a 97 or newer because the have the coil springs instead of the leaf which will give you a better ride IMO and it will give you better clearance under the bumper for rutted hill climbs. Also I would try to find one that has never been taken offroading.

Edit: I would also get a 6 cylinder instead of a 4 cylinder.
