It is 8 minutes, and, correct me if I am wrong, the gravity we feel is the Earth pulling on us mostly, while the sun is a very slight pull. What would happen as a result of a missing sun, is that the Earth would be sling-shotted out of orbit. Imagen a propellor on a plane with a ball attatched. The propellor is spinning very fast, and the ball is released by a switch of some sort. The ball will be shot away from the propellor because it has no more "anchor", in this case, no more gravity that the sun is applying.

I understand completely that this is a joke....but feel it necessary to set some wrongs right and fix some problems.
The Sun is neccesary for life. Starting at the bottom of the food chain are plants and green algae. They produce glucose and oxygen by means of Photosynthesis(basic 4th grade science class stuff). This is consumed by small animals, which are consumed by bigger animals, which are usually consumed by predators. Even cave dwelling animals are effected by this because guess what, they eat things that eat things that eat things that contain chloraphil which is the big part of photosynthesis.
The idea of synthesised UV light that can produce not only enough oxygen to keep us alive, but also enough biomass to feed us, and for long enough is impossible. Without the sun, not only would the temperature drop considerably(think liquid nitrogen in your living room, in a matter of days), but also our water sources would freeze, thereby destroying the energy production industry because pretty much all forms of it require water. Solar energy is out, ofcoarse, as well as wind powered energy, because quess what? Wind is just the rapid change in pressure due to hot and cold variations in the air, which are care of our friend, the Sun.
The seasons would go out of wack as well, causing animals to be born throughout the year, and therefore there would be a massive over population crisis....and even more massive die offs. This could spell the end of the non-human race(s). We humans on the otherhand would suffer from mad cases of insomnia, because our bodies require timing from the sun to start and stop our biological clocks. Women throughout the world would have their periods at the same time because tests have shown groups of women isolated from the natural world(namely sunlight) tend to sincronize their periods. This would make life miserable for everyone every 28 days or so. Without sunlight, the earth would wobble out of it's solar orbit and probably glide through space, until it hit something, or got trapped in something elses gravity field(probably another planet). The moon would slowly gravitate towards earth as well, probably hitting it.

Yes we need the sun to live, if it wasent their the earth would have another ice age that would never end.
But isnt the sun supposed to go out in about 8 million years anyway, then everything on earth (if theirs anything left in 8 million years) will die.Comment

eh, i guess i was a little wrong. i was recently at the museum of natural history in NY and saw something in the planetarium about the solar system. i cant remember, but the narrator said something about life not needing sunlight (maybe only certain organisms).Originally posted by Python14

Life needs sunlight, I dont think anything would survive without sunlight, not even bacteria (I could be wrong, I am only going by what I know). If the sun died out, the earth would go into something like nuclear winter, it would only be a matter of time before everything died out.
But if the human race is still alive before the sun dies out, we will probably be living on another planet, because we would probably use all the resources on earth and would be forced to move off the planet, so it would not really matter.Comment

ok how about this if we can't blow her up we just crash a bunch more plants into it maybe all the bushmaster too seeing as how they always break. maybe there aura of failure would break the sun. and as for all you sun lovers! if you like to sun so much and you need it to "live" so much then why don't you just go live on it! we don't need you you are just wasting energy and materials that could be used to blow up the sun! YOU SUN LOVING HIPPIES that is right everyone that loves the sun is a dirty hippy!Comment

lol this guy tried to make a joke, and everyone else switched into teacher mode. haha I find it funny that we are so smart, even our jokes have to be scientifically correct.Comment

Grayso... you need to go downtown, get a pack of zig-zags, and a few dime bags... and start hallucenating **** rather than an exploding sun

Life does not need sunlight. Life just needs energy (and maybe some water).
Without the sun there would still be geo-thermal energy in the earth that would be able to support some types of life.
Miscue- What is the currently held consensus on the speed of gravity?
I dont think we should blow up the sun. I think we should build a giant shield that would cover most of the world from its evil rays.
