Anyone ever pull their achilles tendon????

Okay here is the scoop. My achilles tendon has been bothering me for awhile but not horribly bad. It finally was getting better then in a Lacrosse game last night I scooped a ball and tried to turn on the "wheels". About halfway down the field I felt it go.....

So today I can barely walk. Anyone have this injury before? How long is the healing process and what do I need to do? Is walking good for it? Got to meet a client in a couple of hours to inspect a building. This is going to suck.....

My mom did when I was like three years old. It has never really fully healed since(slight discomfort at random times). I would say use a lot of those big rubberbands that are made for Physical therapy, they seem to help a lot. Good luck...

If you play sports it's sort of hard to avoid.

I inurjured my foot canoeing, at work and at school. I went to the foot docter and he gave me some stretching excercises.

I found it was easier to just do really low stretching squats. Since that stretchs the same muscles.

technically speaking, you dont 'pull' your tendons, you inflame them (they get swelling-blood) and its called tendonitis.

but, yes, I've had it. Sadly, tendonitis is much slower to heal than a muscle is. Muscles heal fast, tendons and ligaments dont heal fast at all. Best recommendation is to ice for 15 on 15 off 4-5 times per day for three to four days and take COMPLETE rest (no running) for at least a week, and for 3-4 days after you stop feeling it any more.

might be good to go to a local sports med doctor to see whats really up

I've been getting alot of verbal advice along the same lines Kevmaster. Thanks! I'm going out of town for a week for a mandatory class for work so I won't be able to see a doctor in the near future. I may set up an appointment if I don't see any improvement by the middle of the week.

Everyone who has had the same injury tells the same story. Ice it. Realize it takes a long time to get better. Stay off it as much as possible. Good advice but difficult to follow .

Hey Kev is right about inflaming your tendon, that is what the doctor told me as well. I got it playing basketball one night but didn't initially feel it until the morning after when I fell flat on my face trying to get out of bed. I couldn't move my foot up or point it down without pain. The doctor told me to stay off of it for two weeks and prescibed 600mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day. But instead of icing it, he told me to apply moist heat, using a wet hot towel for ten minutes, four times a day. Then strech it after. Believe me, I tried icing it and the moist heat felt alot better. Also he told me to wrap it with an Ace bandage for support.

Anyway, that happened the July 4th weekend and I STILL feel pain occassionally. Unfortunately my job requires me on my feet most of the day so it has been an extremely slow recovery process. The first week and a half I was on crutches.

I have a darn cane that I bought yesterday. Scary thing is I am appraising an elderly care facility and as I was touring the building I had people using walkers getting around about the same speed as me!!!

I too nearly fell flat on my face yesterday morning. This morning was better. Next week when I'm in my class I'll be on my butt for a week. Hopefully that will help.

You can't help but feel pathetic when you are 32 and using a stupid cane....

Not to scare you...but a family friend had something wrong with his achilles. He was just walking down main street in manhatten and something poped. He had to have surgery and a spinal tap...in a cast for a few months...its serious stuff

I thought I felt something pop and other people have told me it is serious as well. I am, however, already getting around without the cane.

It actually started hurting about a couple of months ago (just sore) but I kept running on it, playing lacrosse, and generally aggravating it. I think it will be fine. Just have to stop being an idiot!!!

Luckily I have such a sympathetic wife who has a darling bedside manner (that is sarcasm by the way).

1de: Not being able to run means that there are alot of pilates in my short term future. Do you know where I can get a good deal on a pink leotard?

Both for fun and for a team. Every summer Lacrosse NW has a summer league. For $85 we get 8 weeks of lacrosse plus play offs. It really is fun. There is no practices just a game every Wednesday night. People take it pretty seriously during the game but right after the game no one cares. It is equivalent to a flag football league.

As far as 32 goes it is on the older side but there are several players that are significantly older (40s and even early 50s). Some of the older ones are in really good shape and you have to admire them for not allowing themselves to become couch potatos.

EDIT: I'd love to see something like this in paintball. A tournament that would randomly throw you on a team for a day or two consecutive weekends of play. You show up, you play hard for fun, and it doesn't break the bank and is not a matter of life and death. Many older players with a family etc can't really get into serious tournament play. This would be one step up from rec ball. All for fun.
