Yes...but not every German is responsible for what happened in the concentration camps. Most didnt even know about the holocaust. Maybe to them the Nazi flag represents *pride* for the revitalization of Germany after WWI....maybe the Germans feel it is part of thier *heritage*.

As a matter of fact...this gives me a new idea for a TV show...

That's true, not all Germans were responsible for that, which is why the German flag isn't a paticular affront to anyone. And any German that followed the Nazi regime for any reason was following an evil regime. Now, it's entirly possible they didn't know how evil it was, but that doesn't mean they weren't evil. And I feel fairly confident when I say that your average German does not consider the Nazi party as something to proud of in their heritage, and quite the opposite. The Nazi party's evil has been outed for decades, and anyone that has pride in that party is taking pride in an evil organization dedicated to genocide.

I'm not a politically correct person. People who can't see are blind, who can't hear are deaf. I see nothing wrong with the term "disabled", even if it is inaccurate. I refuse to put "challenged" on the end of every description of a "disability". I believe in the US we celebrate Christmas, not a winter holiday. He celebrate Easter, not a spring holiday. I'm also not really a Christian. These have become secular holidays. Okay, enough about me... That said...

I think the point is that the nazi flag symbolizes ONLY the nazis. For most of us it is NOT the flag of Germany. It is the flag of the nazi party, who was responsible for the holocaust.

The Japanese flag to most of us represents MODERN DAY Japan. For us, it does NOT represent those who committed the atrocities.

That is why the nazi flag (and the swastika) provoke such negative feelings. For a large group of people it is a symbol of the people who committed the atrocities. Conversely, the Japanese flag is not such a symbol.

I have the same take on the confederate flag. But that's another issue.

I truly wonder what went through the mind of the band director when he thought of this show.

In High School, these people use to say that they were going to make a marching show playing Holst's "Mars" from The Planets. It was going to start as a line, and by the time the music got louder, it would eventually form the Nazi emblem and would rotate when it reached the climax of the intro. Maybe this guy actually thought it was a good idea.

In all seriousness, off the topic of PC and such, this does not help the music world in any way. Many critics believe that music is a waste of money in education, and stunts like this only fuel their cause.

I think it's safe to assume that the Rising Sun was the flag shown at the game..

i cannot understand why a high school band director would think this is a good idea. would marching around playing "dixie" and waving the confederate battle flag be a good idea too? after all it was apart of history. i just dont think that halftime at a football game is a good time to bring up certain parts of history. if i ran the paris school district that guy would be typing up a new resume today.

I'm unclear as to whether they actually waved the Japanese flag during the football game or not. The artciel says they do during the performance, and I don't know if they mean the full show (which the Nazi anthem is part of) or the football game.

They might not have been waving any flag at all besides the Nazi flag (since they were playing the Nazi song)
