That's terrible. Are they rewriting the story for the game, or do they have to rewrite the code, cause you'd think it would be backed up. On the bright side, it comes out near my birthday, so I'll have some extra cash, and they might throw some extra stuff in the game cause we've waited so patiently.

On a side note, do you think some one will use the code to make bootleg versions?

Yeah, I saw that article. What a bunch of, ahem, BAD PEOPLE!
Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger

m-98 they have to rewrite all the code to prevent cheats like wall hack. the code can't be used to make bootleg versions because none of the content is there. just the engine and i think the textures. although i guess people could make other games out of those.

Well, I don't feel sorry at all for the developers, because they had to be absolute morons to not have backups of it. I mean they are making this huge game thats going to make them millions, and they don't even back it up? And they can't even keep their system up to date enough to keep this from happening?

Oh well, serves them right, and hopefully they will learn their lesson.

backing their systems up has no relation to what happened not sure why people keep saying that.

the code was stolen if they had a backup(which im sure they do) then all they is backups of useless code now because they didnt destroy the code but by being able to see it they know how anti cheat/theft systems would work in the game and they could make ways around it.

i really hope this turns into TF2 its already starting along the same path.

Obviously you have no clue as to how much time and effort is put into making a AAA title. As someone said, they have backups. Heck, every machine that belongs to the coders, artists, designers, upper management are backups in themselves as they are required to run the lastest data, code, art, etc. Especially during this critical time where they are trying to polish up for shipping.

This was a security issue and if you read other websites, this keystroke program could neither be detected by anti-virus software.

It's not that they have to re-write code because they lost it, it's because they want to make sure that whatever is released isn't easily hacked. Would you rather have the game now and play online with the potential of having so many cheaters out there? It's bad enough as it is. Valve is dedicated to bringing you a quality title which they hope you will spend endless hours playing.

It's unfortunate that this happened to them as I can understand their frustrations. I also develop games for a living so I know. After spending so many years developing their game engine and technology, it's a shame they almost have to go back and redo something that was almost complete.

So before you open your mouth and talk about something you might not understand...make sure you know who the moron is before you speak.

Wow. I heard about this last week from one of my frat brothers. I didn't think it would delay the release of the game at all. Oh well. Maybe now I'll actually have a computer that can run it when it comes out. It's good that valve didn't decide to just release the game anyway. If you've seen the 25 minute trailer movie, you know it's gonna be worth the wait.
