If you knew anything about anti-flag you would know that they have been trying to impeach bush for some time now. Their even spearheading a "Rock against Bush" tour and a compilation cd to go along with it. They have strong social views and they stik by them. THat has to be "punk" doesn't it?

If you even met Anti-Flag you would realize that they are a bunch of whining little idiots. I'm actually shocked that they went as far as they did (They are a local band and I have been going to their shows for years).

As for good punk, people have missed most of the original UK stuff. Like the Damned, Tainted Saints, Boomtown Rats, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Stranglers, Vibrators, etc..

The Jam were never a punk group, same applied to the Boomtown Rats (Johnny Fingers wore PJ's to be a bit "punk" in his appearance) Stranglers by a bit of a stretch were a punk band, Buzzcocks again not a punk group...loud and obnoxious but not punk. At least you have noticed that it (Punk) was UK based, the american scene followed on the back of the Brits and poorly in a lot of cases. Don't forget the Anti-nowhere League they had a good bit to say at the time.

I dunno, if you call Adam Ant and Souxie and the Banshees punk, then I think all the bands I listed fit the bill. Also, one of my favorite bands from the early 80's (The Clash) were always thought of as punk, but just in the same way you don't call the Jam punk, neither would be the Clash.

As for the original UK stuff. What most people think of as the "Punk" image came out of the UK in the mid 70's. The US also had their own original punk that had a slightly different sound but came about around the same time. Band such as the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Iggy Pop, etc came out of New York in the mid 70's and were the US Punk of it's time.

In the late 70's early 80' bands like Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, etc. That in the true sense, was not really punk (or at least to the people who started the movement). Over time, these more modern day (and popular) punk bands became almost mainstream. This is where I think punk died. There are bands out there still trying to play punk and keep it a live, but good ones are few and far between and they are all local or VERY underground. Back in the early 90's the first time I heard Greenday I thought to myself, punk just might make a come back. This was before their first real release and sounded almost like punk of the 70's. When their first album was released I was very disappointed, not because the music sucked, but because they changed their sound.

Just a few years ago, I was turned back on to the "Punk" scene by my brother. He had met up with a band called Deceiving Ralph out of Ohio. I never gave them much of a listen, but when they came to Pittsburgh and my brother (16 at the time and no licenses) wanted to go see them I took him. They had a sound and energy that I had not heard for a good 15 years. They are sorta a mix between Dead Milkmen, Ramones and the Clash mixed into one. Will they go far? Probably not but they sure are fun to listen to.

I covered myself with the Adam and the Ants...as after they got the CBS deal it all turned to ****e and Souxie and the Banshees were support bands to whole movement taking to the stage on the same bill as the Pistols...100 club regulars. Blondie was billed as Power Pop and that was from the american press of the time. The Clash in outlook were a primaraly a political band as such with their anger at the system were and are to be regarded as Punk. I agree with your ananlagy of Punk of its time but the way in which they went about it was so mainstream compared to the UK and as such the american invasion can only be seen as a copy.

OMG - Im glad you kids are aware enough to know that crap like Blink 182 should never be called "punk".

Thats great you're discovering some of the old stuff. Classic. Sorry to say you kids are growing up in a very stagnet time musically. Hopefully something will happen and a FRESH NEW movement will happen before too long, like Punk happened, then early Rap, then the maturity of hip hop, and appearance of grunge, and the brief electronica rennisiance.(sp)

They arent as old, or as hard core, but I really like Bad Religion.

Yeah, Bad Religion is awesome stuff, although I was a bit disappointed in their last album.

Other bands to check out include The Damned (if you like euro-punk), Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, The Dickies... geeze, there's a million good ones. You know, the ones that are never on the radio. :)

Punk finally died the day they made the Great Rock and Roll Swindle.....Mclaren was just a money grabber out for what he could get, the shop Sex with Vivian Westwood was proof enough of that, and that had come much earlier, the music was just a sideline.

Music falls into one of two catagories as far as I'm concerned. Good Music or Bad Music.

Does it really matter who started punk? Does anyone really lose sleep at night because of it? I Don't.

To hell with it, I'm going home and I'm going to listen to some At The Drive-In. Then I'm going to go to sleep.

Just like everything else, the history of music is very important. Yes, there is good music and bad, but to know where the roots of a particular genre comes from and where the styles cross, is important. Most bands draw influence from the bands before them, the few that do not are truly revolutionary. For some people, listening to music is more than just sounds coming out of a speaker. And for these people, the influences and history of the music means a lot. For others that don't care, that's fine, just don't put down the importance of it.
