So the earth is going to be destroyed in less than a year

There is no specific date. How or why it happens doesn't matter. And it is not guaranteed to occur, just with an 80-90% likelihood within the next 9-12 months. It is somehow obvious, so there was no way the government could keep it a secret.

What do you think will happen to society? It isn't 100% guaranteed, so would people go on with their lives, hoping for the best? Praying to their gods for salvation?

I think it would be a bit different from the typical "omg Earth is ded in 10 days." It's a long period of time, but not that long. So it's hard to say how people would react. Obvious panic, but after 1 or 2 months of panicking, doesn't that get a bit tiring? Crime would probably shoot through the roof, and governments would probably try to keep a very tenuous hold on the people. Hard to say whether or not they'd be successful. Martial law would probably be immediately enforced, but how long before the soldiers enforcing it decide that it's not worth it? When you have so long, yet so short to live, who wants to keep other people from rioting, stealing, and killing, when you could be at home with your family.

Buy a plane ticket to Alaska. Live out my remaining 9-12 in complete bliss, fly fishing everyday, and paintballing on weekends. At night I would play Rainbow 6: three and good dinner for my wife(I would of course ask Megan to merry me).
