Guys, The SBS was what the SAS was formed from..it came first then was disbanded and then the "new" special force created was the SAS.

Actually, the CIA devised the plan...we just arent allowed to do any killing, perse. As this was high profile, and Israel wanted him as well, we allowed them to make the mark. We were working in conjunction with them, and they took the hit.

Well your British, your supposed to know these things. But from what I hear the SBS' training is harder than the SAS'.

Like it was stated before each of these teams operate in diffrent ways for diffrent reasons... its apples to oranges... and in fact you missed alot that do fall under the term special forces. in fact i can think of 4 you missed from the US navy alone... Diver, EOD, SWCC, and UCT all fall under the special forces/special operations. If i was to vote i would write in UCT but thats only cause thats the stuff i have been trying to get into since i joined

True but how many ppl would actually recognize and think about voting for them? I couldve put in the Danish Jaegers(sp?) or the Austrailian SAS but I didnt think ppl would vote for em.

Id have to say its:
1. Delta Force/ SEAL team 6/SAS/SBS
2. Green Berets/regular SEALs.
3. Russian Spetsnaz(these guys are brutal!?)

The Canadian JTF 2 is another special forces unit that is note worthy. Trains with SAS and Delta. Specializes in Artic warfare.

The Russians and the Chinese have my vote for second after the SAS.

Well in my opinion 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment (DELTA) are some badass sob's and definatly should be on top.But implying which unit is better isn't going to be to accurate due to the fact that every unit excels in certain tasks,i'ts like saying whos the better athlete one plays hockey and the other football.

There is not one unit that does everything, they often deploy multiple SOF units to do joint operations.

And as for Rangers not being SOF (or not in the sense) that is entilery untrue.They conduct logistical and tactaly important operations in small units deep in hostile territory and also can be deployed in more conventional light infantry force.They are deployed with SEALs,DELTA,SF(just to name a few) and other overseas SOF.There is a reason there under USSOCOM not because the title sounds cool.

In conclusion all SOF units have there own nitch in the SOF community and none of which could do there job alone.If you think Rangers arn't SOF in the sense or

well you would think so, but to some extent I was wrong I was thinking of the commando units that were formed at the beginning of the second world war, I did a little bit of searching to find formation dates and this is what I found

THE SAS
The history of the SAS can be traced back to WWII. The idea was developed by a Captain David Stirling. He thought of the concept while recuperating from a parachute accident in Cairo.
The British SAS was created as a desert raiding force to weaken Rommel's North African logistics network. It would also be used to hinder aircraft operations.
The first successful SAS operation happened December 1941. Two SAS groups destroyed 61 aircraft at two airfields.
Another raid destroyed 27 airplanes. In another operation, 144 men were parachuted with jeeps and supplies into an area close to Dijon, France. The SAS inflicted 7,733 German casualties in Europe. 4,784 prisoners were captured. 700 vehicles were destroyed or captured. 164 railways were cut. Seven trains were destroyed, thirty-three were derailed.
David Stirling was knighted in 1990.

Brtish SAS selection is specially designed to break people. Selection is the ultimate testing of endurance and mental strength. Selection comes in 3 phases:
Special Forces Briefing Course: Three day class to show potential SAS and SBS recruits what is expected. Includes both class room lectures and physical training. Candadates are shown films and given some insight into Selection. The candidate MUST pass this course to be allowed onto Selection.
First three weeks of Selection are mostly held in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains in Wales. If a soldier fails a test more then twice is "Returned To Unit". During the testing, Soldiers face increases in their weight in their bergens (rucks), and distances become greater. One of the most difficult parts is the "Fan Dance", a march over the Brecons which takes about 4 hours. Another is the "Long Drag", which is held on the last day of the three weeks. The Long Drag is about 40 miles over the Brecons carrying a 55 pound bergen. The passing times range from 20 to 24 hours.
Jungle Phase: SAS and SBS soldiers will be integrated into patrols. Rain is almost non-stop. The jungle affects people in different ways. Disease is a constant threat.
Escape and Evasion: Soldiers are taught how to live off the land. Escaping is taught. Former "Prisoners Of War" talk to the class. Final Exercise: The men are paired up with other students from other branches and units. They are given only old jackets, ripped pants, and falling apart boots. They are let loose in a large wooded area. They must check in with various check points. A "Hunter Force" is always in pursuit. By the end ALL the recruits are captured. Now they face TQ. Applicants must stick to the "Big 4". After completion the remaining class will go it's separate ways. For the SAS men, they receive the beret and famous "Winged Dagger" beret badge.

THE SBS

The Special Boat Service (SBS) is a naval special forces group. They are a branch of Great Britain's Royal Marines; and are considered one of the best naval special forces teams in the world. There is a minimum requirement of two years service in the Royal Marines before being eligable for SBS service.
The Special Boat Service was formed originally during World War Two to satisfy the need for maritime special operations.
Following the war little need was seen for Special Operations, but the idea still had merit. Various teams were combined or shut down until all that remained was the Royal Marines "Combined Operations Beach and Boats Section" (COBBS). In 1948 there was another name change, to "Small Raids Wing of the Royal Marines Amphibious School" and a deployment to Palestine, to aid in the British blockade. Members were responsible for ordinance destruction and the removal of limpet mines planted by the fledgling state of Israel.

So it would be fair to say that the SAS predates the SBS slightly and they train alongside each other but whilst one is a naval unit (SBS) the other (SAS) is all areas.

Won't vote since I don't know but here are some things I've heard.

Family friend is a Chinook Pilot. He claims British special forces are extremely tough. He also said that the Delta force is extremely tough and only respect their higher ranking officers in the Delta Force. In other words if you are a captain in the army (which I think he is) the Delta Force guys basically ignore you and do their own thing.

My uncle was in Bosnia. He always told me that he really respected the Polish military (all the guys in it).
