Best rifle for conventional long range marksmanship: Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Rifle in .338 Lapua

Best "Snipers rifle"? US Army M24 (has better stock and other features than the Marine M40 version)

I think the coolest looking one would be Walther's WAS3000. It looks so odd...

The best is one I saw at the Secret Service training center (I have friends in high places). I asked about the rifle but it was a couple years ago so hopefully I can remeber the statistics:

          Kevlar stock
          Remington reciever
          select grade Hart barrel
          Leupold 10x scope

This thing could place ten shots inside a three inch circle at ONE THOUSAND YARDS!!!! I saw the guy do it.

Question for sajohnston: Did America ever sign the Geneeva Convention?

Yes we are in compliance w/ the Geneva Convention. As far as 6 rounds from a GAU-8 being the magic number to kill a tank, I have never heard that from a Hog driver. Usually such numbers are products of statistical analysis, i.e. it takes X # of rounds from a 105mm howitzer to "neutralize" an Air Defense Artillery position, etc. These are good for nothing more than logistics planning and planning the number of rounds on target. There are too many variables- tank could mean T55 and it could mean M1A2 or Merkava, this is a huge spread. If fate is on your side it could only take one round in the right place to disable a tank or any other piece of equipment for that matter. I am not sure what burst settings the A-10 has either I would have to ask one of the fighter wings here next time we work together.

The Apache has burst settings of 10, 20, 40 or ALL (all means the gun continues to fire as long as the left trigger is depressed to the first detent with all safety constraints met or second detent overrides safety constraints). Depends on the mission and probable targets and how many rounds we have on board as to what I select and set the burst to during preflight (on a box in the forward avionics bay outside/under the copilot gunners crew station). Most of the time we travel with either 600 (light) or 1200 rounds (heavy). The gun can hold a total of 1200 rounds.

I saw on the discovery channel that military R&D is working on laser guided bullets. The spotter painted a dummy tank where the ammo would be stored, and the shooter fired a .50 bullet with the laser guidance chip and blew-up the tank. I want one for christmas!!

stupid history channel for feeding me false info...

if you every get to see the show about the marine scout snipers you will see where i get my crappy info. btw i didnt say completely blow up a tank or anything i just said take out as in disable(like making it unable to move) I dont know where they shot it(dummy tank) but gas tank, ammo storage, even maybe treads(guess). They did mention it taking one shot(very well placed). They also mentioned depleated uranium rounds.

I forget what the real name for the plane is but the one nich named"tank buster" used 50 cal depleated uranium rounds to destroy out tanks so it is possible(not one shot in this case) These were probably old tanks i dont know about the super armor of today.

Back to the favorate sniper rifle thing i have never really shot a real military sniper rifle but the closest was probably the a long barreled 270(very flat shooting)

Well Foo, I don't but the Russians do!

MiniMag...The "tank buster" is an A-10 Thunderbolt. The same aircraft sajohnston was referring to in his post. It fires a 30mm round.

The gun is 1/8" of a game that is a FOOT long!

I think the dragunov is pretty cool besides the fact that it is far too much like a... uh... a... auto rifle( )?

Nothing wrong with the history channel, I'd say it is about 85% accurate. The best civilian "open source" (aka unclassified) for information is Jane's Defense Weekly. They are the ones who make the super detailed (yet graphically lacking) PC games. Check out the reference section of the local library they can tell you more than you would ever want to know.

I bought their longbow gold a while back and seriously it was so much like work I only played it twice. The physics aren't completely accurate but the HUD, systems and threat are close. Of the helicopter games I have played Comanche 3/4 have realistic flight physics IF you turn off all of the assists (have to manage the cyclic, collective and rudder). But Comanche is a trade, the graphics/physics are good, but the systems of the aircraft are way too easy to use in the game.

The only thing about supposedly killing a tank with one small, precision shot is they (modern tanks)are designed to "vent" an explosion of the fuel cell or ammunition magazine outward or overboard away from the crew compartment. The laser guided bullet thing is real though, we are fielding laser guided 2.75" folding fin aerial rockets next year, 18 pound shaped charge warhead, supposed to be one shot one kill for modern tanks. We will see, I love and trust my Hellfire aimed at the split ring (where the turret rotates on the chassis). Put one there and you get what I call a "pop top!"

Actually, It's AWM, not AWP. In Colsol, etc.. it's called AWP for some odd reason, but the AWM Stands for "Arctic Warfare Magnum"

Next time, look @ the Buy screen. It's AWM.

Heh, don't worry 'bout it. I 'Still call it AWP too, its just I did AWM for accuracy purposes.

                              no pun intended

That's when the turret comes flying off adn if it's a T80 you get a nice explosion because there is a live round in the open, right?
