Computer guys! I need some help!

I have a weird problem on one of my PC's. I'm runnin on a small network with 2 PC's. I'm usin a router.

So now my other computer can't get an internet connection, while the one I'm on works fine. I tried working on the cables to make sure they were connected. No problem there. I even switched the network cable going into the non-woriking PC into the working one and it still worked on it. So I'm guessing its a hardware problem of some sort.

    Any help please?

what kind of router is it...have you tried unplugging both, unplugging all wires, replugging them in, then repowering? routers tend to gather a lot of crap in them for some reason and need a good resetting every so often.

      few questions:

did the other computer work on the router previously?

does the other computer work on the internet (through bypassing the router)?

turn off everything, modem, router, both pcs.

restart, using the normal order. ie, modem, router, then pcs. make sure all the lights on your router are showing it is operating correctly.

if all else fails, pick up a new nic card for like $10 and see if that fixes it.

          Yes
          Yes

But for some reason I dont think the other PC is even connecting to the router. It dostn't show up on my router's DHCP client list or show a connection of any kind when I do ipconfig. Hmmm...do you think reformatting would work? There may be a virus of some sort on it.

before you try reformatting or anything, just try getting a new network card. $10. A lot cheaper and easier than reformatting.

You don't need to reformat. Some questions:
Are the lights on on your network card? If so which ones?
Try to ping google.com (in a command prompt: 'ping www.google.com'), what does it say?
If its win 2k or xp type 'ipconfig /renew' (run 'winipcfg'in win 98) in a command prompt, does it get an ip?
              .

Light is on. But its somecrappy thing built into the mobo.

With the ping..."Ping request could not find host www.google.com" or something like that.

When I've tried the ipconfig /renew all I get is a message that it wont work on this device or something. Currently it doesn't give me a "Default Gateway" ip at all.

Most cheap routers tend to have their DHCP die on them for whatever reason. 1st thing 1st is to reboot the router. Unplug it and leave it unpluged a minute. While its unpluged take a peek at our computer in question. Go to start->settings->control pannel->system When you get into the system dialog go to the hardware tab and fire up the device manager. Take a peek at that list and make sure the Nic dosent have a bang next to it (I.E. a yellow triangle with an ! in it) If it does infact have one there is your problem... trouble shoot your hardware. If not... power your box down, plug the cat5 back up and then power your router back up and when it is back up fire your box back up. Check your connection.

Still down... then go to your box that works and get its IP info. (IPconfig in dos or winipfg in the start menu)
Get the IP, the Gateway and the Mask. Go back to your broken box and go to setup that interface manualy using these settings... only change the last octet of the ip address to something different... one more or one less should be fine unless you are using a mask besides 255.255.255.0 .. if it is different let me know what it is and I can give you the right ip range to use. (If you need step by step on this just ask :) )

Once these setting are in, go to run and do cmd and type ping and your gateway ip. for me it would be "ping 68.224.67.1" less the quotes. Does it time out or do you get a reply? If you get a reply then try the ip on the other computer. If you get a reply on that then try my gateway thats listed above. If that all works then your machine talks on the net and your DHCP isnt working properly. You can just setup DNS at this point and you should be good. If not then let me know where it fails and we can go from there.

Wow. Thanks! I did everything and still can't get any sites to load. But I did get a ping from both my gateway and the ip you gave me. So how do I go about setting up DNS?

I really have no idea what to do. Can someone please help me? I've tried everything! Any idea why my PC isn;t automatically obtaining an ip address?

What happens if you specify an address?
