When I specify an ip, subnet, and gateway address I can ping other PC's, but I cannot connect to any servers for internet, e-mail, and stuff. I figure it's the DNS since I have no server specified, but I dont know what to put.

The real thing thats boggling my mind is why it wont obtain the ip's automatically like it did before suddenly a few days ago it just quit.

Have you tried to delete then reinstall the NIC drivers?

You need to contact your ISP for the IP addresses for the DNS.

Reinstalled NIC...still no luck. Anyone have any idea on why it wont just get the ip automatically? The other day it just stopped suddenly.

Try this and get back with us..... set it up with the ips and whatnot and ping the following address.....

              67.97.255.231

If you get a response then put that addy in your web browser and you should pull a default page for plesk (AMATURES!! HE HE HE HE) ... anyhow...

If thats the case then you can get your primary dns out of the other computer by doing an NS Lookup... heres how..

go to the command prompt type in nslookup and a website... i.e nslookup www.automags.org ... it dosnet matter.. you will get a response server, adress and then the answer.... the adress is your DNS. Put that in and you should be good to go. My guess is that your router does proxy for dns and it will be the same as your gateway... but that depends on the router. Let us know how this goes.

              Good Luck!!

Ping didn't go through. It timed out.

nslookup wont work on this PC for some reason (Win98 the other is XP Pro)

I'll try again this afternoon when I have more time.

I believe network utilities are not part of Win98. Go to your XP system and use nslookup. If you are still trying to get a dynamic IP, make sure there are now IP addresses in your gateway, DNS, WINS, IP Address fields. Make sure that both DNS and WINS are both disabled. Check the NETIOS tab to make sure that the check box is not checked. Also check to be sure that there is no file call win.com on the root directory of C drive. IE. "dir c:\win.com". If there is, rename it or delete it. I found this problem from MS Knowledgebase found at http://support.microsoft.com/default...11&Product=w98. You might also want to check out this also: http://support.microsoft.com/default...90&Product=w98.

I dont think the win.com applies to the bad computer because its WinXP Pro. And...I'm pretty confused on how to make sure all the ips are filled in and disable the ones that need to be disabled.

Ok I thought the problem pc was Win98 based on your last post. I just didn't read it correctly. To change the IP setting to dynamic is easy. You just need to select "Obtain IP/DNS address automatically" in the General tab. Under the Alternate Configuration tab, select "Automatic private IP". Click on OK. There is also no need to reboot the pc. You just need to disable the the network connection then enable it. I also forn a link for troubleshooting TCP/IP connectivity located at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314067.

My router at home was being annoying, I shut down both computers, unplugged the cable modem, unplugged the router, then I plugged the router in, plugged the modem in, restarted the router, turned on the computers, restarted the router again. For some reason it took that order to get everything working.

Arg ... dint realize that box dint respond to ping... should have pinged it myself prior to posting that ip.

Manualy config the IP and ping the folowing,

                                24.234.30.164

If it responsds then put it in your your browsewr and see if you get a response there.

If that works then you can get DNS out of the other box by doing a run, winipcfg select the adapter that is the nic... the others will proboly be modems and then hit the details button. You will find a dns box in the details screen. Should have 3 entrys or your gateway depending on the router that you are using.
