WWI only had the US involved after a german plot to get Mexico to attack the US was discovered nothing to do with that liner getting sunk and WWII...we all know why US involvement happened there.
Not saying for one minute that US involvement in either conflict didn't help....WWI got a lot of americans killed early on as the US Generals didn't listen to the Generals who had already been fighting for 3 years and the tactics employed were the same as France and the UK had tried at the beginning to no use...but since when did a General listen to others.

What is the difference then between the UN refusing to stand up to resolutions passed against a country and the LON not having the "TEETH" to do so?

The thing is the UN did stand up for the breaking of its resolutions in just about all cases except when a member nation vetoed action done to them. (US vetoes resolutions passed towards Israel, US vetoes actions cast towards themselves, other countries vetoes actions, etc......) If you are meaning Iraq, the UN did pass sanctions against them. They didn't use their military option for they knew the problem they would get into after they removed Saddam. So it is kind of not truthful to say the UN will not, or did not use its teeth.

the LON did have teeth, it failed to use them however.

Correct as for membership of Japan..my bad
You might want to read these links as they kinda explain non action and also the reasoning behind the events within China..mainly due to the rise of Mao ...as to for memebership and self removed membership of the LON plus of course expulsion. You might also notice that the Italian conflict with Ethiopia was a simmering row dating back to the previous century. The non action of Britain and France was not exclusive to those countrys as a decision after a meeting of the LON was deferred...
Creation of the LON was after WWI as the ratification the Treaty of Versailles was the basis for the league.

funny thing about the treaty of versailles is that 39 members of the senate had already stated they would vote it down before wilson ever got back from paris. when wilson got back to the states he went around the us promoting the treaty and tried to get the ppl to write letters to their senators stating they like the treaty etc... in the middle of this trip wilson had a stroke he immediatly went back to washington and had a more sever stroke putting him in a vegetated state from this time on his wife seceretly ran the nation kinda interesting

You want to know what is even funnier, they US did not sign the treaty of Versailles, they instead signed a seperate treaty.

just seemed like a farce truce for the world because everyone was tired of fighting conflicts. the US is a perfect example, because they were dragged into WWI and then the focus was on isolation.

Normally I would agree with you but this thread has been quite civilised, but then perhaps this is because the US has been cited as one of the causes of the non effective role the LON could play

If you wanted to stop WWII, forget the League of Nations, they should have called the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Sean Connery could have saved the world again!

Mark's right...this is about the most civilized thread on politics on AO...maybe its because Mark and I are debating facts(Im right ) and nobody else gives a hoot what the reason for the fail of the LON was?

                            aye....

Maybe the continuing polite tone is because the politics are 60+ years out of date? This more a debate on interpretations of history than on politics. And there isn't a wide variance in the positions, anyway.
