Never heard about the rubbing alcohol trick. Make sure you don't have any holes from the cat to the exhaust. Hook up a scanner to find any codes, especially ones for the o2 sensors.

Well, 'round here we just kinda lean to one cheek and let 'er rip!

*EDITY* Ooops, forgot to add my useful content. Ethanol, cause you don't have to just eat corn. We don't have emissions testing here so I can't sympathize with you.

Well, seeing as how i live in the same town as the largest ethanol plant in north america, i know a thing or two about ethanol. A lot of gas stations around here anyway use a gasoline/ethanol mixture, usually no more than 10% ethanol because you'd lose too much power in combustion, its just there to keep the fuel burning cleaner. I dont know about ethanol anywhere else but here they mix it with gasoline right after its made so people dont consume it. I dont know where you'd be able to get a large amount of it, without ordering from some chemical store.

Pollutants from your car's exhaust. If theres too much they can make your car illegal to drive unless it gets shaped up to a more environment friendly exhaust.

Actualy it would fail that way... too much o2. The machine knows what should be coming out of the exauhst.

Bumping the octaine may infact hurt your cause. The higher the octaine the HARDER to burn. You only want to go higher octain if the car isnt running properly on the lower octaine.

Thats why I love nevada... Took my Formula for smog after it was returned from stolen. With the car broken and running no cats I still passed. No $50 bill or none of that...just took it to the station and it passed.

What they can do, but they usually won't is they will put another car on the inspection machine and tell the machine that it is your car. In NY they have a camera watching the machine to prevent this. People still do it though. Another thing that some stations will do is they have some spare cats laying around that they will stick on the end of your tailpipe to help reduce the emitions.

run the car for a while to heat up the catylitic converters.... Hot cats are MUCH MUCH MUCH more efficent than cold cats...

I hope you like water in your fuel lines rubbing alcohol is usually 30 percent water...

If anything put regular in your car... regular gasoline burns faster and is more volitle.

The only reason why anybody would use premium is on high performance high compression or forced induction cars when you dont want a faster burn. The more volitile the mixure is the more likely it is to produce preignition knock & ping due to autoignition of fuel in the cylinder before the spark plug fires.

Higher octane is used in race and high performance vehicles so that they can run more boost and more aggressive timing to make more power without blowing up the engine...
