We are going Back to the MOON!!

Now that China has a space program, it looks like we are going back to the moon.

    Back to the Moon!

Last one there is a rotten egg!

No, really, think about the real estate. And for a just billions of dollars, it would be the best deal since the Louisiana Purchase if we could stake claim to the moon.

Not to mention, the best platform for a "base" to be used as a launching point for manned missions to Mars. I've always wondered why we never returned to the moon. Instead, we have spent tons of time, money, and resources on an ISS???? I think a lunar based station would be much better.

I have always wondered why there wasn't more interest in developing the moon as a platform. It seemed like it could potentially get more Nations invloved in the space program. There are quite a few nations that can launch satellites via rockets, versus the few that can send manned units. Couldn't these nations send material to the moon unmanned to be assembled by a much smaller number of manned missions?

I seems like it would be a win-win situation for everyone involved. There could be cooperation in the scientific endeavours, the costs of the program would be spread over a larger number of nations. Of course the US would be in charge since you guys have the best technology and are the only ones who could control the manned missions.

Maybe I'm just on crack though.

I think we should keep the ISS. It could even be integrated into a trip back to the moon.

What would a platform on the moon accomplish? Assuming your not Dr. Evil.

I could see funding for nasa increased through brining back rocks and selling them as long as they didn't bring back too many as to flood the market and kill the value.

How much would YOU be willing to pay for a 1oz moon rock? How much do you think it would cost them to get it to market?

People are paying buttloads for the rocks. I wasn't talking profit, more defraying the costs when we are going there anyway. Kind of like driving another kid back from school and him helping with the gas money. You do'nt make anything but the trip got cheaper.

I think a moonbase would only make sense if there was definately a lot of ice(water) on the moon. If not, then i dont see what good the moon would be. (other than advertising space for large corporations)
I think continued work on the ISS is very much needed. Its just the "International" part of it is what is causing the problems. IMHO

The rocks are dirt cheap. It is the shipping and handling that will kill you!

Exactly sell them on ebay for $1 and noone will look at the $100,000 shipping and handling price

Perhaps, but if you remove the "International" part, then you are left with either the "Space Station", or the "American Space Station", the acronyms for either of which would be problematic.
