Although 3 years out of high school, I still get a kick out of this stuff. If a straight-edger tried to force their beliefs on me, I'd do the only logical thing- eat him and wash it down with a beer.

The Orange County edge guys are the worst. They always come to our parties with a lot of heads and pick a fight. Too bad they all suck at fighting hahahaha. We always have problems with it down here though. You cant fight one edger, you have to fight em all. They come in their big groups, tight pants, slicked black hair, thinking they are all bad asses. Then they get jumped, go home, and come back for more the next weekend. LOL ya sXe is really cool....

I do know some chill straight edge guys though. The ones who know what it means and where it comes from. Everyone else just does it cuz its trendy. And MOST of them have an ego. They think just because they dont drink/smoke that other people cant either.

On a side note...once a SXE brawler tried to hit me with a beer bottle. Ironic eh? :)

As far as the sXe thing goes... I guess that you could say that I've been pretty fortunate; I've yet to meet a militant sXe person. The couple that I know, are really mellow about it and the worse that they get is playing pranks on drunk people at parties. In fact one of them is a good friend of mine, and his only take on sXe vs. non-sXe is that it is your choice what to do with your body and your life. He feels that he made a better choice with his, and I am inclined to agree with him. I've heard about the militant straight edgers that whould beat up someone for smoking and what not. It does not make any sense to me.

I'm proud to say I havn't met one stright sXe (god, I feel dumber just for typing that) kid, at least no vocal ones, I guess it just hasn't caught on here in canada. Their are lots of people who dont drink, or do drugs, and lots that don't have sex(not that they realy have a choise though )

But from the sounds of it, I bet the government came up with whole thing to try to get kids off drugs. I mean, they just pay some bands to preach about something, and you'll have a line of dumb kids wanting to copy them.

Actually the government is fairly anti sXe. They constantly try and link it to gang activity to try and scare the public.

Not So Straight Edge

In the regular monthly metting of the South Orange County Gang Task Force, the activites of the group Straight Edge were discussed. The officers have asked us to inform parents of a very disturbing turn that this group has taken. Straight Edger came out of the movie Fight Club and was portrayed in the movie as a group that was committed to a drug, alcohol, and sex free life style. Members were so commited to these concepts that they would use violence to convince anyone else that they were right. Many high school age students have flocked to this group, often with their parent's blessings. In the last few years, Straight Edge has evolved into a cover for students involved in drugs, alcohol and sex. Students are using the claim that they are "Straight Edgers" to build trust with their parents and distract them from looking into their activites.

Many of the web-sites dedicated to the Straight Edge life style continue to claim clean living but, according to the sheriff's department, if you dig just a little deeper and go into the chat rooms you will find a very active drug community that goes against everything preached by the original Straight Edgers. When asked "How many of the Straight Edgers today still uphold the concepts of a drug, alcohol, and sex free life style?" the officer of the Gang Task Force responded "virtually none." In additon, the violence of this has escalated, as have other crimes associated with the group. For this reason the District Attorney's office is looking into classifying Straight Edger as a legally recognized gang. Another disturbing trend is many who start out in Straight Edger have "graduated" into various other white supremacy groups such as Metal Mulisha.

Recognizing if your child is involved in Straight Edger is not as easy as it once was. At its inception, Straight Edgers could easily be recognized by an "X" on the back of their hand (often carved into the skin). They could also be spotted by their dark black hair, tight pants (boys often wear girls pants), studded belts and jewlery, and piercing (usually of the lip and eyebrows). As the Straight Edger life style has changed so has its appearance. The clothes have become more mainstreamed and the look has "morphed" into one that is no longer distinctive. The one remaining feature seems to be the dyed black hair.

The purpose of this article is not to blanket all kids involved in this life style and say that because they are involved in Straight Edger they are bad. However, if you are the parent of a child claiming that he/she is a Straight Edgers, you need to be aware that it may no longer be the clean-cut style originally portayed. The best weapon you have for keeping your child away from unhealthy life choices continues to be YOUR involvement. Know whom they are spending time with and what they are doing and where they are doing it. Check up on them often and unannounced. Kids want you to be involved and want you keeping a close eye on them, regardless of what they say. It makes them feel safe and secure that you are in their life and they WILL thank you when they are grown.

2. Dying your hair does not make you srtaight edge

3. Just because you are straight edge does not mean you are a voilent sociopath.

4. Fight club didn't start straight edge, in fact didn't it show Tyler and the main character drinking and smoking?

5. If I had a kid that was concerend enough about his or her life to make the commitment to become and stay straight edge, I'd be proud.

6. Most of the staright edge people I know do not have dyed black hair.

7. That article is the biggest bunch of BS I've been privy too in a long time.

that article was pulled straight from the parents newsletter from a high school in southern california. its been making its ay around the straight edge boards for a while now. its raised enough of an uproar that it was removd from the website after a while. it was originally here, on the third page: http://www.svusd.k12.ca.us/Schools/ETHS/bullhorn.pdf

breg, i agree with you 100%. while there are certainly some militant, very violent edgers out there and those who claim the edge and then go out and get wasted, to pigeonhole an entire movement with the actions of a few is entirely misplaced and utterly incorrect. this article was an exercise in ignorance at its most blatantly obvious.

I just cantstand people who get so judgemental about one group or another.
Personally, I am not straight edge. But, I respect those who choose to be straight edge.
These idea that they had in the afforementioned post, well, if they even bothered to do any research they would find out that they are so wrong.
