      Our Message:

In September of 2003 the battery in my first generation ipod would hold a charge for no longer than one hour. I brought the iPod into the Apple store in Manhattan for repair and was told they do not currently offer a battery replacement program and my best option was to buy a new ipod. I then called the Apple Care 800 number regarding this issue and was told the same. I then sent my ipod to the Apple Executive office addressed to Steve Jobs with a note explaining my situation and requesting a replacement battery. The Apple Executive office contacted me via telephone to explain that Apple does not repair or replace dead ipod batteries and that it was policy of the company to recommend to the customer to purchase a new ipod when the battery fails. I then looked into and purchased a third party replacement battery, this battery was not endorsed by Apple. After the complicated installation my ipod did not work at all, even when it was plugged in. I then purchased a new ipod for $400.00.

In response to this my brother Van and I made the short film "iPod's Dirty Secret" After we finished production of the film, but not necessarily in response to it, Apple began offerring a battery replacement program for the ipod for a fee of $99 and an extended warranty for the ipod for $59.

We think Apple's new policy is fair. Our movie is a documentation of our experience.

Keep up J&C, we had a post about that already last week. Its a hoaxy internet post to spread a myth. A sorta myth. Apple doesn't stock em but they always been available for 50 bucks since they came out. They always had replacements for them and still do. So that is very misleading what that guy put up. And they last as long as any other rechargable in any other unit and replacement cost for a similar unit is like 50 bucks too. So there is NOTHING to that story but misleading information. Its all a urban legend more of less. I got an original iPod that I have had for over two years still running strong on original battery. I should expect it to go some day soon. Like I would any laptop or ANY OTHER MP3 player. And I would expect it to cost me 50 bucks to replace it. So what is the point when you really end up at the comparison? Nothing!

Secondly the battery is very easy to replace even on the old ones. And many people have done it without problems. I do not think these guys are telling the truth. Hit up the Apple forums and you will see that they exagerating or they idiots.

Huh? No we talking about the battery. It IS a hard drive itself actually. These guys were trying to replace a battery in thier iPod. Apple doesn't do it after warranty runs out. Thats a year. They expect that you would just go buy an aftermarket as its much cheaper than them doing it. But these guys didn't do that. Untill much later then they claim they couldn't get it to work so they just bought a new iPod. Later Apple decided if people wanted them to do it they would so they said sure we do it for 99 bucks! Now why would anyone want to pay 50 more bucks when its easy to do. Just because these jokers couldn't doesn't mean hundreds of others have not successfully done it. The Apple forums are full of how too's on it. And always have been. Even when these two guys were trying to do all this through Apple! They don't once mention they even looked for information outside of Apple. The Apple warranty is one year. I suspect you would be hard pressed to find any other player with any better warranty than that.

I wouldn't rule anything else out either. I like the iPod but the others are nice too. I just think the iPod is still a little superior and has more versatility. But they all gonna need new batteries some day. And if they use one large rechargable its gonna be around 50 bucks. And note that the replacement aftermarket vendors batteries are twice as big as the original in total power not size. So your actually improving the thing! Their is an iPod piggy bank battery and there is an attachment that will run regular AA's as well. If you chose to extend the run time or something those options are there. And as I said... aftermarket batteries are readily available that will last even longer than the original. Apple does not "endorse" them but they don't disallow them either. Those guys left out an important fact. They do not say ANYTHING About them. Why would they? They are out of warranty at that point anyway! They could care less what you use then. Its not thier problem so why complicate it by ENDORSING anything they have no control over? I wouldn't say nothing if its was me. And they don't!

How much do those replacement battery packs, piggy battery packs, and AA packs go for (estimate) And how long does your normal battery run for?

Oh no I wasn't attacking you Jack. Didn't mean to come off that way anyway.

What you really have to hunt for on those guys story is that the iPod they had was 18 months old when it stopped taking a charge well. That they do tell you but they brush it off as that they felt it was unreasonable for one to only last 18 months. It really is not that normal but its certainly not ABNORMAL either. But again Apples warranty is a year. Partial cost after 6 months and full replacement first 6 months. Very good warranty for something like this. Most of the others are 90 days.

I didn't notice the costs of those other accessory things but I spotted the accessories at the Apple Store the other day. Most stuff like that is 50 bucks or something but you can do better at Macmall or Mac Wharehouse than you can direct from Apples store sometimes.

I have taken my older model iPod camping and it lasted four days but I was not playing it all day of course. I know I have gone over 12 hours on it before unplugged. I normaly keep it plugged into the power plug in the truck and play it through the radio. I have the little FM adapter for it and I just keep it truck powered so its full charge when I get somewhere. And I do have DC outlets in the camper so I can play it through there too and never have it off power supply. Don't really use the battery unplugged all that much myself.

I saw one fella in the Vespa Scooter site that had installed a iPod up inside his glove box and cut in some speakers into the front of the Glove box and was running his iPod as he road around. I think he had pulled battery power up there though. And was running off the scooters battery. Pretty cool set up!

From what I've been told on chat programs and 2 friends at my college, some of them had bad internal wiring causing random loss of songs, screen fading (not power loss, actual fading), button use loss, and of course the 18 month irreplaceable battery thing.
