to join the campus volunteer ambulance corps. or not?

I've been debating whether or not to join my university's student-run ambulance corps, and become an ambulance driver.

pro's: they're obvious...especially that i can then use the EMT certification to join any other ambulance corps when i'm not at home

con's: i have to take a 6hour/week prep course this semester (two days a week, 3 hours a day)

i have to take an 8hour/week EMT course next semester (two days a week, 4 hours a day) which costs $200 PLUS textbook

these time commitments would obviously restrict free time and other things i could do, like go to the gym, etc.

    your opinions?

volunteering for anything of this nature is always a good thing.

are you planning on getting into this field or any medical field after school? if so this could really help. depending on where you are at i would check with your local EMS or Fire service or sometimes even the town/city.
they will sometimes help you out or pay for all of your fee's.

to me it is well worth the time. i do Firefighting Full time and Volunteer for Fire/Ems in the town i live in.

all in all after the day is done you will feel better about yourself. knowing that you help people in there worst time is a good thing.

i would say go for it but any medical field requires you to have continuing education so it will take up your time.

if you would like any info or details let me know

if you get the night shift be prepared to pick up lots of drunk people who have either hurt themselves or have alcohol poisoning.

Haurpers Ferry is only good if you have time. Be prepared to take the odd shift. Other that that I dont see anything wrong with the program.

It may be annoying every once in a while when you have a class to study for and you have to prepare for a practical.

Oh... and you WILL get the night shift. If you have trouble sleeping odd hours you might want to reconsider.

The advantage is you wont be having to pick up that many frat boys up on campus cause there are no frat houses. However you do get the occasional alcohol poisoning call in the Dubbs and very rarely do you get people jumping off the library tower... what ever happend to him by the way?

another thing to consider is you can get nothing bad from having this knowledge. You never know when it will come in handy when volunteering or in the future.

It's good stuff to know. That's a lot of medical knowledge, for a relatively low price (in $, though not time). You wil carry the benefit of that knowledge and experience with you for many years to come, and it may help you to save someone you really care about. Not that you wouldn't get a big charge out of saving the life of a stranger, I expect.

You're young, you have time & energy. Take the opportunity to travel a slightly different path. You will certainly grow as a person, and you may get some interesting adventures out of it.

butterfingers- you must've graduated like last semester then if you know about the tower thing...UNLESS you're in the binghamton area still?

                        jeffy- good advice...

i keep having this battle in my head whether or not being an ambulance driver is any less important than being an attendant EMT...i figure if anything it's more important cuz you're actually in charge of something, while EMT's are mostly there to take vital signs/etc. what do you guys think?

interesting...did you have any friends that graduated with you that moved onto med school? i know someone who graduated last year and it'd be real weird if you knew him.

about the guy from the tower- noone really knows what happened to him, just those who were close to him did. after falling (jumping) from the 15th story of the library tower, he lived. how? noone knows. he lived for at least a few weeks after that then there was no word of a funeral or memorial service, so i assumed he was still alive. my RA was good friends with him, but i don't have the nerve to ask her.

there was a murder shortly after that suicide, another suicide (someone jumped in front of a train), and there was an interesting motorcyle rear-ended a camaro car accident that same week. the first month here was pretty traumatic. it became quite dreary, b/c students seemed to be dropping like flies (no pun intended).

so what did you major in and what are you doing now?
