    whey + powerbars?

lol not to beat a dead horse, but i'm thinking of going whey (and?) powerbar protein plus bars for post work out nutrition. is using BOTH going to be more harmful than good? and is whey a good idea? i know people have suggested met-rx, but 1 that's expensive, 2 i can't find it around here, 3 whey seems pretty darn efficient. and powerbars are the best protein bars right?

i promise this'll be the last thread of mine about this topic hehe.

edit- i was just on the powerbar website, and 50 would cost around $100. any place to get them cheaper? or would it not be necessary/good idea to take them every day?

Just use a whey protein shake mix. I will contact my friend (An Exercise Physiologist) and see which power he uses. It's very effective and inexpensive. Avoid brand names if you want to save money, they offer little/no benefit over some smaller companies' products.

PM me if I forget to reply..

Just stick with whey protein pre and post workout. Your portein intake should be your body weight, but I usually dont follow that. I drink whey protein shakes, Diesel 97 (which has whey in it), and i eat nitro tech bars which also have whey.

      Protein makes a big difference.

Yay this is right up my alley.

Ok, the 3 most important things YOU CAN DO for post workout nutrition is to restore previous blood sugar levels, increase amino acid levels in the blood (which will help with muscle repair) and offer the body simple and complex carbs. So much emphasis is put on protien now-a-days it drives us health & excercise science majors insane. Post-workoutyour body needs sugar, more specifically some form of fast acting glucose, to restore glycogen balance in the body. Without that, you could ingest all the protien you want and get very little benefit from it. In fact, you might as well dump it down the toilet because thats whats all that is going to happen. Otherwise, you drink that shake with massive quantaties of protien and your liver just converts it into fat because it see's such an excess. AND, if you don't give your body enough carbohydrates to convert into glycogen, it's just going to use your MUSCLE tissue OR the protien you just injest. and that will make you tired and fat at the same time basically.

Eating the powerbar after your workout is not a bad idea, depending on your goals. Powerbars are primarily for long lasting endurence type activities. They are designed to be easily digested and provide the body with lots of complex and simple carbohydrates (which eventually turn into sugar anyway).

In the end, you are better off just EATING food. Do you plan to buy supplements your entire life? They are, after all, SUPPLEMENTS. To supplement a deficiency. How about this:

Immediatly after a workout, drink 8 ounces of some kind of juice, could be anything (aside from orange juice, the acidity would have negative effects on protien synthesis), and eat a PB&J sandwhich with whole grain bread and with lots of peanut butter. Loaded with a good amount of protien, simple and complex carbs and sugar. A few hours later, eat a good meal with clean protien sources like chicken or fish, veggies, and a sweet potatoe or brown rice or beans.

Forget dumping your money on supplements like that. EAT REAL FOOD. It's A.) Cheaper, B.) tastes much better and most importantly C.) it's healthier! Plus this is a model you can incorporate for life long fitness. Not something that is a temporary supplement. Believe me, I've spent thousands on supplements and this is a much smarter system.

Feel free to PM me anytime with questions or for more details.

spraying- if i wasn't limited to DINING HALL food at college, i would prolly just do as you said. but alas, i'm extremely limited to what the dining hall provides me for food (which is extremely dissatisfying, to say the least). anyway, you're completely right about everything, but in terms of what i can do myself (especially timewise), supplements are what i have to go with. plus, everyone i've talked to say it works. not to mention like powerbars for instance provide carbohydrates as well as protein, which is what is used to make glycogen.

tobz/automaggin- you think JUST using whey mixes once postworkout will be fine? doing powerbars too will overdo it, i guess?

edit- it seems that doing just whey mixes is a bad idea cuz they don't supply you with carbs as well, like powerbars do.

Exactly what Mango said. I'm starting to work out more and eat better. You have to set a diet for you workout and what kind of body you want. I eat 6 full meals a day, intake 35 grams of protein when I wake up, 20 grams pre workout, and 50 post workout. I try to eat poultry products alot. I did not start using protein til a few weeks ago and it does promote good muscle growth.

If you are going to take protein, dont just stick to shakes. Bars offer alot of carbs and other nutrients. Take a look at nitro tech bars.

problem with powerbars is that they taste like food that has been eaten, and then digested by somebody with POWERBAR branded in their large intestine.

i heard powerbars were the best protein bars to use in terms of everything- protein amounts, vitamins, minerals, CARBs, etc.

how the heck do you intake so much food without gaining massive fat? you must work out like...3 hours a day or something lol...all running, too. or something...
