XBox Thompson drive - anybody else have this problem?

I just got an XBox a month ago, and after a few weeks it started making clicking and wirring sounds, and the video would start skipping and give disk read errors. It did it a little bit at first, and I thought "ok, the xbox is loud, no problem", but the problem got steadily worse. It feels like running a computer game on a system that doesn't quite meet the requirements.

After reading up on it, I found I have the "infamous" Thompson drive, and it often dies after 1 to 2 years. I guess mine one of the worse ones.

I contacted XBox support, and am going to be sending it in to be fixed. For those who know anything about this problem, or the Xbox, is it going to be coming back with a newer drive (samsung?), or another Thompson? Anyone else have this problem?

just get a ps2, between that and a pc you'll be able to play any game that would come out for X-Box, plus about 100 more games that won't.

            heheheahheh yeh

Xbox only gets disc errors when you get games from blockbuster thats when you get the games where 8 year olds have crapped on, keyed, and pissed on.

Just send it in. They'll hook you up with a Samsung drive.

I got my box about a month ago as well, and.. it has a Samsung drive. Dont ask me how I know, lets just say I voided my warrenty. Stupid warrenty, who needs them anyway? Of all the xboxes I have seen, not one has been broken

has anyone looked at the Power supply in the Xbox? it looks like it was built and designed by a 5 year old.
my tent burned 4 of them up in iraq. why wouldnt they put a fuse in there? or a dual power 110/220 supply. come on rockheads. meh.

I got my PS2 the day they came out, I had disc-read errors for about a month or two, now it works perfectly, errors have stopped completely.

I like being able to actually hold a comfortable controller too.
