The enforcer's do keep the game in check. As thordic has pointed out , and it's true, since the instigator penalty came along more injuries have happened. That is in the main part of a stupid penalty for defending your teammate. Yes there are penalties for cheap hits but Moore's hit on Naslund wasn't cheap. The hit Tuzzi did to Moore should and most likely will be taken to the Vancouver courts. He should get jail time and be ousted out of the league and Hockey period. There is no room for this type of stuff in this sport.
Fights are part of the game. It's accepted that it's gonna happen. With a game that physical and fast there is no preventing it. Even with the instigator penalties fights occur. But there have been more Boarding majors, kneeing, high sticking and roughing calls lately. Plus I'm pissed due to the fact the LA Kings have missed two key players (Allison and Deadmarsh) this season due to concussions from LAST season. It's obvious more people have been hurt and that the instigator needs to go away and let the enforcers do their job. It's after all what they are paid to do.

Bill Clement says it better than I did, I think:

Todd Bertuzzi deserves to be suspended for 20 games for his attack on Steve Moore. It was a cowardly, premeditated act against a smaller player that did plenty of damage. Even worse is that Bertuzzi went after Moore from behind. A suspension lasting 20 games would potentially cost Bertuzzi seven playoff games and send a message to the rest of the league that this type of behavior is not allowable.
But it should be pointed out that, were it not for the NHL's instigator rule, this situation would likely have resolved itself back on Feb. 16 after Moore knocked Canucks captain Markus Naslund out for three games with a concussion. Any player deemed the instigator in a fight earns an extra two-minute minor penalty and an additional 10-minute misconduct. But without the threat of additional penalties the Canucks would have been able to police the situation immediately, send a message and be done with it.

As it is, though, the instigator rule is allowing certain players to skate around using their sticks as weapons without fear of retribution from the other side. I have yet to meet a player or coach who likes the rule. Abolishing it would be a good thing for the game because teams would then have the ability to regulate themselves before the league has to step in.

I agree with clement in the instigator rule. However, I think it's a load of **Fecal Matter** that he thinks it would've been taken care of.

Moore manned up when cooke challenged him early on in the game. I don't recall Moore running from anyone in the 5-5 tie either (could be wrong, just don't remember).

For the record, I reiterate that 20 games is far to light and is **Fecal Matter**.

Keep in mind -- although fighting is a part of AMERICAN hockey, look at how successful the Olympics were. There were no fights and the games were very entertaining. While I believe a fight serves the right place and time, what Todd did was uncalled for.

1-2 fights a game is about normal. Not every game has a fight though.

Fighting is a big part of American and Canadian hockey, and virtually non-existant in European hockey.

However, this is America, the NHL has teams in the US and Canada, and Americans and Canadians are the ones who watch the NHL games. When its European money paying the salaries, then we can play European hockey. European hockey is fun to watch, but why not just watch soccer? European hockey is like soccer on ice. Goes a little faster, but that about sums it up. Very little hitting, lots of puck movement. And soccer is oh-so-popular in the US.

Yep! And actually there is only .68 fights per game in the NHL. Last year it was a bit lower, like .56 per game.

just imagine it...the whole team are filled with Kovalevs, Bures, Mogilnys, Jagrs, Sakics, Forsbergs....etc...lamp would be lit quite often with some sick goals, but not one big hit...unless they collide

Well I heard Barry Melrose talking on the Dan Patrick Radio show today and I kinda agree with Barry. He said that the instigator needs to go and Todd did the right thing in the wrong way. He also said that it wasn't just the Naslund hit that could have affected this. It was a combo of getting spanked 9-2, Naslund hit, and just blowing his cool. I don't agree with Barry though when he says it should stay out of the courts. He broke a guys neck. Ya it might not of been what he intended to do but cheap shots like that can't go unnoticed. I think he should miss one full NHL Season and the rest of this season and maybe even serve time during the suspension. Bertuzzi is/was a great player but he ruined his image on his own and has now earned the title of a thug.
                                Sorry, I'm old
