Ihave a ton of that stuff.

You could burn it, it does that pretty well.

I love Mg Ribbon. let's see, you can light it with a blow torch(or something similar, but not a normal lighter). It burns pretty bright, so you don't want to stare directly at it...

You could use it to ignite some thermite(Fe2O3+Al) which burns at ~3000* and is used to weld rail road tracks among other things.

You could grind it up into powder and mix it with an oxidiser(KClO4, KNO3, etc.) for some nice Flash Powder.

          The possibilites are endless.

As for reacting with water, I don't think it would really do anything. I remember reading that it'll make Hydrogen gas(Which is always fun), but I'm not too sure about that.

I remember one day in Chemistry, we were playing with the bunsen burners so I grabbes a peice of Mg Ribbon, and told my friend to see if it would melt. I'll never forget the look on his face. when it ignited, he screamed(along with everyone else at/around the table) threw it in the sink and turned the water on. I started cracking up cause he looked like he saw a ghost. the teacher looked over, chuckled, shook his head and kept on checking his email.

well, from grade 10 science.... im pretty sure it dont do anything with water... but burning it will make a VERY bright light witch is cool. As for the flash powder, i rember reading about keeping it in somthing that resists static, cuz it could blow

if there is any reaction at all, it would be very small, nothing like one of the Alkali's.

FP's stability usually depends on what oxidiser you use, how fine the powder is, and what ratios you use. I would go into detail about the compounds, but it would prolly get edited by a mod. Generally, just a plastic container is fine.

if you reload ammunition, you could make yourself some nice tracer rounds... just a little piece of magnesium on the back of the bullet and when you shoot it, it'll burn; thus it's a tracer...

... it will burn in "some" moisture of water and flash. Does not have to be lit. And maybe catch something else on fire. It may even start to react on a Humid day even and smoke and smolder. It will boil kind of in a small solution of water and if enough water is in a solution of something like Alcohol there it will just drive off the water. Its used sometimes to keep water out of solutions of other chemicals because it will react with it. Its commonly stored and shipped in Kerosene. Keeps water/moisture off of it.

I once had to respond to a garbage truck fire where someone threw out a vial of Solvent with a small amount of Mangnesium metal in it. The vial got cracked open at some point and the Solution around it flowed off...And when the truck was washed out it sparked a small fire of some remaining paper in there. I had to suit up and crawl in and find the scource of the fire. And then deal with SCDHEC about it all.

Its illegal to ship a hazardous material without manifesting it as such and complying with all the rules. You can and will go to jail. Long term jail for this too.. its not something to mess with.

And that stuff is not all Magneseum metal. Its a small coating on some paper in exempt amounts in a vacuum pack.
