    actual cost for broadband/Hi-speed connection?

Alright, I've been using 56k dialup for the past 6 years. It really hasn't bothered me too much until recently when I am finding more and more places are catering their content(file sizes, graphics, etc) to people using broadband connections. I have been searching around trying to find a good price for high speed connection, but no one seems to have actual numbers. So my question is, for those of you using High speed, whether it be cable, DSL, or whatever, how much do you spend per month for it? Specify what you use, where you live, and what you pay? Thanks.

BTW, I'm using this to convince my parents that getting High speed is worth it.

I live in NY, I use optimum online cable, its $40 a month. I had to pay a $100 one time fee for the modem which I own. Installation consisted of plugging a standard cable wire into the modem. When you take into account AOL was $20 a month, then the secont phone line, this is cheaper.
We get a $10 discount because we use the company that owns optimum online for our cable service. Still $50 a month is what the 56k cost, but alot faster and more convinent.

Cable is only cool if all your neighbors don't have it too. Because your cable shares bandwidth your neighbors.

When everyone gets off work in the evenings and checks the web/email it sucks. I've had RoadRunner cable.

My current DSL is 1.5Mb/128kb for $34.99 per month through Verizon. Free DSL modem with a 1 year contract. User sets it up.

Fortunately, Cable is a very viable option for me because the "block" that I was quoted as being in contain 5 homes...of which only 2 of them have computers, and of that, only one house has household members under the age of 62. More or less, I would have the entire connection to myself.

I pay like 35 a month for SBC, and it sucks. I only get 150 down, 90 up, even though it's supposed to be higher. There's a neighborhood near me that has around 12 homes in it, and they got together and decided to get a t3 line or something like that. So then they have super fast connection, and share all of the payment.

Check out dslreports.com to find a provider. Currently I use bellsouth and get 1.5 mb up and 150k down, but soon I'm switching to pac bell, they have something like 3mb up and 350k down. Pac bell is $60 a month, bellsouth is $45.

Don't go with cable, DSL is better in the long run.

How far away are you from your telco's central office? You can't get DSL service beyond about 16,000 feet (3 miles), and it's degraded at that distance if it works at all.

paying $40 a month, True 8mbit down, 1mbit up (tested). Optimum Online, wouldn't replace it for anything.
