No offense to our British friends, but I think everyone is giving them a little too much credit. If teaching history is a problem in North America, why not in the UK, too? It's sad when people don't know their history, but when you are guessing, which sounds more likely? Battle of Endor, or Battle of the Bulge?

For some of those questions, the choices aren't 100% clear. Historical evidence exists of real figures who may form the basis for the legends of Robin Hood and King Arthur. In that sense, they existed, though the stories we associate with them are probably false. I have a BA in history, and I would have said Yes to both those figures.

Finally, remember that at one point Tolkien said he was attempting with LotR to create a uniquely British mythology. If peopel are starting to confuse his tales with real history, then he has succeeded.

Something to think about is that people tend to believe what they have seen (this is the case for the article not falling educational standards) so much so that how often do people say that 'cocker fires further than a 'mag...just because someone has written something doesn't make it correct. This subject of which fires further comes up time and time again and since the 'cocker is a max of 20 yrs old ( a little less but just to round things up) then what chance do subjects of 50 years or more in the past stand in the realms of accuracy?

Most of these people must have been kidding.

And PyRo, every one knows the Alamo was based on the Battle of Helm's deep.

I thought they based that movie on the war between humans and dinosours when we eventually whiped out there entire specials with a giant bomb we named "The Alamo".

I think society puts too much into making movies historical. Poeple should know they are watching entertainment not a history lesson.

No they don't Chris, the average person is a moron with very little historical knoweledge unless they saw it in a Mel Gibson or Spieldberg film.
