Diesel is the way to go. They burn cleaner, are more efficient, and fuel is cheaper, unless you live where i do, then its the same. My 20 year old full size chevy with a N/A 379ci Detroit gets arround 25mpg, and thats running a 396 injection pump and injectors. Dumps a lot more fuel in. truck weighs 6K pounds, and has the aerodynamics of a barn. Plus is lifted. I love diesel's.

I think we defend gas stations too much. We all blame OPEC when really, it doesn't ahve a whole lot to do with OPEC. Let's look at this little detail here:

Gas stations buy their gas thousands of gallons at a time. Why does the price need to jump so much on a day to day basis? A regular company might buy a product for $1 and price it at $1.50. If it doesn't sell it gets progressively cheaper until it does sell. Not with gas!

We'll say a gas station buys for $1 per gallon, then they sell for $1.50. Oops, the price gets raised for no apparent reason to $1.64 THE NEXT DAY!! Why? Did your cost go up? NO IT DIDN'T! It's the same stuff you bought at the same price! It went up because it's Friday and they and the just DECIDED they wanted an extra 14 cents per gallon! It's so skewed it makes me want to buy a gas station, because I figure it's the only undustry where you can charge whatever the heck you feel like charging and get away with it.

Except you can't charge too much or ppl will go to the cheaper station down the road. That's where the conspiricy between gas companies begins. Can you imagine what kind of business traffic a gas station would get if it sold gas just .50 cheaper than the rest of the local stations? The cars would be lined up around the block.

But that dosen't happen now does it? I wonder why..........

You realize we have about 30 cents a gallon in taxes on gas too right?
Also, when you go into Abecrombie and buy a shirt for $30, you know the store actually paid about $15 for it right? Now if gas stations pulled that kind of markup we would be paying about $3 a gallon. After taxes, rent, utilities, paying someone to pump the gas, most of the owners are pocketing about 7 cents per gallon that is sold. Atleast when I worked at a gas station thats how it worked. The owner also used buy gas like it was a stock, when he knew the prices were going to go up he would buy as much as possible so he could keep the prices down, and when he knew it was going down, he kept the tanks near empty so he could lower the prices as soon as the cheaper stuff was delievered. Blame Opec, and taxes, not stations

I cannot count the number of times people yelled at me about gas prices like I had any controll at all. Hell I couldn't even lower the price and sell at a loss if I wanted to, only the guy who owned the place had that power.

Actually on a few days, and during certain hours at night the place was running at a loss, but was open for the convience of the few good customers who often came in during those hours. On average, the owner was probably pocketing 4-7 an hour which I don't think is too unreasonable.

They don't make a huge profit on gas, but i'm sure they do play games. Like if one guy can get gas 30 cents cheaper than the guy down the street, he will sell if to 10 cents a gallon cheaper, pocketing the extra money. Then the guy down the street gets his delievery, and sells 10 cents lower than the other guy who retaliates by lowering his prices, and it goes on untill they are within a couple cents of each other with niether place making much money. The same thing with if the guy down the street has to raise his prices 20 cents a gallon, you will raise yours by 10 cents, people will still buy from you, but you make more money.
I'm not blaming anyone, I bought a gas whore of a car because I was willing to deal with paying the extra money. I would have bought a diesel truck if I wasn't

Here, theres an intersection with 2 stations on opposite corners. One is always at least 10 cents more expensive than the olther one simply because its on the busier side of the street. I guees the convenience of not having to turn around and come back the other way is worth 10+ cents...

Its funny tho, cause like 1 mile away, theres a gas station thats always like 8 cents cheaper than either of those...

I know what you're saying. There's a station that is on near two HUGE roads and in a hub of a bunch of stores. They always charge at least 8 cents more than ANY otehr gas station within 20 miles! It's funny because they get so much business from lazy grocery shoppers, video renters, starbucks patrons, steakhouse diners, etc. I think the key is to sit right next shops that rich people frequent and then charge more Seriously...that's my new plan in life...

Yeah good job with that. Pay whatever it costs to fill that sucker all the way up. Show those oil companies that you'll pay what ever price so they can drive the price sky high for the rest of us too.

                                Yup yup
Most of my driving is just for the hell of it too. If I wanted to I could get away with only using about a tank (15 gallons) every three weeks.

Anyone else ever spend more in gas than they saved to go to a place further away to get cheaper price?
