Have you guys read the fine print on these Gmail accounts. Google can open your emails (received or sent) and read them and add advertisements into your emails.

This is a gross misrepresentation of how the Gmail system works.Originally posted by Chris42050Have you guys read the fine print on these Gmail accounts. Google can open your emails (received or sent) and read them and add advertisements into your emails.
Google's servers index your messages, yes. Along with allowing for full-text searching of your entire e-mail box, this process generates a list of keywords on which the side text ads are based.
Google does not modify the contents of the e-mail, and there is no point in the process at which another human could read your e-mail.Comment
Thanks Steve!
I almost missed that email since it went directly into my bulk mail folder (as many of my emails do!)Comment
They don't actually go through and read your mail, they hve programs that look for keywords and add ads to the right side that they deem appropriate for those keywords. As you can see below, the ad's are pretty small. I didn't even notice them at first.
Edit: When(if) I start getting invites, after I take care of a few friends, I'll start throwing them out to you guys. If you don't want to wait, and have some time to kill, try the GMail Machine.Last edited by WickeDKlowN; 06-22-2004, 04:39 PM.Classic RT - RT02667

You're quite welcome.
Both Yahoo and Hotmail are being a little sneaky with Gmail invitations. Yahoo buries them in your bulk mail folder and Hotmail seems to be alternating between kicking them to junk mail folders, delaying delivery, and bouncing them back to the sender.

If anyone else wants to give out invites here, I've been told there's a quick and easy way to give out a blank invite:- Send an invitation to a fake e-mail address
- Go into your Sent folder, where you'll find a copy of the invitation
- Copy the URL from the invitation, and paste it here
The first person that clicks the link will be able to open an account.Comment
