Well, since it's Friday, and work is slow, I've been thinking about this since my previous post. My friends and I used to have movie marathons years ago when we were out of high school, before wives and kids put an end to that sort of thing. Since you need a 'theme' for a movie marathon, here's a short list of 20 great directors. I've listed three of my favorite films for each of my personal top ten directors, plus some notes.

I know people will disagree with my list, and I've probably forgotten or omitted dozens of great directors, but I had to stop somewhere.

                        Stanley Kubrick
                        2001: A Space Odyssey
                        A Clockwork Orange
Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned [...]
Hard to choose only three with Spartacus, Paths of Glory, and Full Metal Jacket all contenders.

                        Steven Spielberg
                        Raiders of the Lost Ark
                        Saving Private Ryan
                        Schindler's List
                        Spielberg. 'Nuff said.

                        Francis Ford Coppola
                        Apocalypse Now
                        The Godfather
                        The Godfather: Part II

                        Robert Altman
                        The Player
                        M*A*S*H
                        Short Cuts
An aquired taste. Altman has directed as many bad films as great ones, but Gosford Park and Nashville also rate highly.

                        Quentin Tarantino
True Romance [writing credit/directed by Tony Scott]
                        Pulp Fiction
                        Reservoir Dogs
Where will I put Kill Bill Vols 1 & 2 ten years from now?

                        Oliver Stone
                        JFK
                        Talk Radio
                        Platoon
Hard to pick three, with Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, and Natural Born Killers.

                        Billy Wilder
                        The Apartment
                        Some Like It Hot
                        Stalag 17
Brilliant. Never made a bad film. The Spielberg of the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

                        Akira Kurosawa
                        Ran
                        The Seven Samurai
                        Rashomon
Japaneses director had more influence on American film than any other. From Lucas's Star Wars to Sturges's The Magnificent Seven, American filmmakers have copied Kurosawa's great films and characters.

                        Milos Forman
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
                        Amadeus
                        The People Vs. Larry Flynt

                        Ridley Scott
                        Blade Runner
                        Gladiator
                        Alien
Incredible range as a director. Drama, Sci-Fi, Action, Horror, Fantasy, Epics ... Ridley Scott can direct anything.

                        Martin Scorsese
                        Pass.

                        Barry Levinson
Has Diner, Rain Man, Bugsy, and Good Morning Vietnam on his resume.

                        Alfred Hitchcock
                        No explanation required.

                        John Huston
Bogart. The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen; it's all about Huston and Bogart.

                        David Lean
Made a string of great films with Alec Guinness, who unfortunately will be remembered most for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

                        Richard Donner
Great filmmaker who has underminded his own legacy by directing bad sequels to his greatest films. See The Omen, Superman, and Lethal Weapon franchises as exhibits A-C.

                        Sergei Eisenstein
Russian born filmmaker of the silent era, The Battleship Potempkin is often cited as the greatest film ever made from the invention of celluloid until the late 1930s.

                        John Schlesinger
Bizzare collection of films to his credit, but includes Dustin Hoffman pairings for Midnight Cowboy and Marathon Man.

                        Joel & Ethan Coen

                        Kenneth Branagh
Brilliant career until Emma Thompson left him, it's been all downhill since. Henry V, Dead Again, and Much Ado About Nothing are all offbeat but good.

Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse.
