I wore glasses or contacts for 40 years. I had a condition called MAP-Dot Dystrophy or the more technical term, Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy which precluded me from having LASIK. So... I underwent a version of PRK where they soften the center of the cornea, scrape away that area and then apply the laser. At first I was disappointed to have to go through this procedure, but as explained to me by both Pepose LASIK and TLC-The Laser Eye Center, those individuals that apply to the military service academies and are headed to flight training, those candidates that have had LASIK will not be accepted for flight status. They will however accept the PRK procedure.

When completed, they place a low power contact on your eye and remove it approx. 5 days later. By that time your cornea has regenerated itself and they will only do one eye per procedure. It takes approx. 6 months for your vision to stabilize after this procedure but you will see dramatic effects within the first week, especially if your prescription is of the 20/100+ and higher variety.

There is no pain, per se. There is some discomfort when they use the speculum to hold your eye open, but not intolerable. There might be what I would call major irritation during the healing process but they supply you with the necessary drops and medication if you need it.

***By all means, consult with the surgeon(s) you are considering. Most of them actually do free screenings to determine whether you are a candidate for the procedure.*** I work for SBC and our vision plan covered approx. 15% of the cost.

To end this..... For me, this has been a godsend. To have the freedom to do so many things that did not require me to worry about my glasses or contacts has been well worth the cost. NOTE: Yes, because of my age I do have to wear cheaters to read or for close up work but I was well aware of that going in.

I have to start looking into this pretty soon for my mother. She cant stand her eyes anymore. They are suposedly very good in Austin.

I cant imagine what bad eye-sight is like. Last time I had my eyes checked, it was while they were covered(literally) in Super-Glue(a bottle under pressure opened all over me, mainly in my face even though my arms were holding the bottle as far away as I could). I had tested 20/10 then "Lady, I can see - it just REALLY hurts!".

        Havoc....

I don't know what the cost is in the Austin area but here in St. Louis, TLC was $3800 without any kind of insurance or vision plan. Also, TLC Centers did the procedure on Tiger Woods. I know for a fact that TLC does free screenings.

As I said before, if anyone is even considering having it done, I believe it to be well worth the time, minor discomfort and cost.

I wish her well if that's what she wants to do.

          Wow

You guys pay a lot for Lasik. My procedure was 1800ish Canadian. The clinic I went to just did some of our Canucks too...maybe that's why they dropped the games vs the Flames...

Not to say that your surgeon wasn't qualified, but there are those surgeons here in the US that charge considerably less also. The one question I would have for someone like that is, "How many procedures have you done?". My surgeon has performed over 20,000 and I know Pepose has done well in excess of 25,000. They also admit that there is a learning curve associated with what they do. I will admit that price does not equate to quality because each individual presents a different set of variables they must take into consideration. But it sure made me feel better knowing that he had done 20,000, as opposed to the guy who just got his certificate and had only done 200 and charged far less.

              lots

              23,000

He also owns the clinic and the machine...a lot of places up here the doctors rent time on a machine and share facilities. But my guy owns his own and handles the maintenence.

I think it's just a difference in the med systems.

My contacts prescription is 5.0 right now. I thot I was pretty blind until i talked to my cousin. she is like a celabrity at her eye doctors office. She has by far the worst eyes there. She has to special order her contacts. Her perscription is something like 16.0.

By the time you would be able to have lasik, there might be an even better way of performing vision correction, I am looking into it myself, although I don't have the money...

When I looked into it a few years back (I still can't afford it) I was told that there was a very good guy out in Dallas. the 3000ish fee also covered all the follow up visits to the doctor.
