The tip is not made out of plastic.

I got one for christmas and it worked fine. It didnt always activate when I wanted to, and I had to play with it to get it to melt the solder like I wanted to, but I thought it was better than waiting for an iron to heat up and risk burning myself. Then it fell out of my chair and the tip shattered. Dunno if its worth it.

Oh, and by the way, you can stick it in your pocket. It has this little thing called a tip protector that goes over the top of it. And a carrying case if you want to use it.

they don't show that in the commercial. the guy just finishes soldering and immediately puts it in his pocket.

Ah, didn't see that before I posted... my bad.
Well, I dunno, but I usually dont keep my spare change in those pockets.. I'm not even sure if spare change would set it off either..

It works. Got one for X-mas. The tip is carbon composite, and shatters quite easily, but works wonders on wires. It doesn't work nearly as well on solid pieces, wirind however its a miracle. Gets a perfect solder job done in roughly 10 seconds, with no preheating. Metal tabs... takes forever, and actual circuitry, can be fried 9it is using electricity to heat up and all). Thats my .02 cents.

heats up really fast, cools down really fast, and is just awsome for getting into tight spots.

I have one... It works okay... not meant for fine projects but works decent enough for general purpose use.

Get a real one. Like a Weller.
My brother got one of these a few months ago:
Soldering irons are hand tools similar to soldering stations but more compact and lightweight. Shop here for an electric soldering iron or a gas soldering iron.

We put it to good use, its an excelent soldering iron for the price. The pencil tip is great for soldering those .5mm solder points on a PS2 motherboard as well as everything else. I wouldn't buy anything from an infomercial... especially if its "As seen on TV".
                  .
