Hey, knock DEVO all you want but I like the song Smart Patrol (I think) / Mr.DNA... it was in Jackass, so I figured out what song it was.. The Mr.DNA / Mr.Kamikaze part is cool..

As for these cool bands, alot of it is because people love to bandwagon. Alexisonfire = Decent band, but now its a trend. 90% OF THE SONGS HAVE THE SAME STRUCTURE! Starts with some chords, then the guy screams, then he screams again, in the background you hear normal singing, then a chorus type of music, then repeat... God damn. Another disturbing trend (In Brantford / Hamilton / some other Ontarioan citys..) is bi-sexuality.. Don't ask why, I guess it adds to their 'punkness'....

Once again, I am sad to have been born in the same generation as them..

    Unicorns are people too ...
Old Narhwals are people too ...
Grizzly Bears are people too ...
    Caterpillars are people too ...
Baby Peacocks are people too ...
lew "My hand was a little shaky and I released too soon."

Hmmm, well I do agree that on "Watch out!", they did come out with a more structured feel to thier music, I think it was just them finding thier niche in the genre they are apart of. I give respect to almost all Equal Vision artists, but I will admit thier older stuff, like Polaroids of Polarbears and .44 Calibre Love Letter did have a more ORIGINAL feel to them. That, however, does not dismiss that this band does have talent and can put on an amazing live show without all the lights and glamour of all popular bands of the now.

Blah, I hate all covers, even when my favorite bands do them. It's just never the same as when the artist who wrote it performs it like it was meant to be performed. Like when 311 covered Love Song, that was just a crime against music.

I wouldn't say I'm against all the "popular" bands since many of the bands that I like have become popular and that normally relates to being successfull. The bands that I have a problem with are the ones that don't really have much musical talent. I mean when someone that's only been playing bass for a year can learn to play your songs with ease, especially when there's only 2 different riffs I think there's a problem. Also, how cool really are some of these "cool" bands like the Used, Dashboard, ect. I mean i'd say over half of their fan base is under the age of 16. I know that if I was writing music I'd want to maybe be touching people more of my own age, not some 12 year old girl that doesn't even understand the music. I dunno maybe that's just me.

As far as bands covering songs, if it's done right then I think it's a cool thing. It's kind of a tribute to the band they're covering. It's when a band starts to make money off that cover and it's passed off nearly as their own work that I have a problem with it cough311cough or coughGary Julescough. I mean, you don't see tons of painters "covering" other paintings. And when you do its says specifically in the title who and what other piece inspired it. There's no doubt that it was covered. But on the radio for example all you hear is "The Love Song, by 311" and people that aren't framilier with the Cure think that's it's some new great song by 311. And trust me I've talked to even a few older people that have heard it and think that it's an original song by 311 which does an injustice to the Cure since their version is a 1000 times better than the original which it should be since it's original, not some knockoff.

The only time I've heard "Lovesong" covered right is when A Perfect Circle combined that with Diary of a Madman by Ozzy. that's a truly amazing cover which has a lot to do with the fact that Maynard truly repspects Robert Smith and Ozzy.

Well said Retro, and on a somewhat "funny" said note, the band Mushroomhead did a "cover" of Crazy by Seal. Check it out, the song is called Thirteen. The actual song starts at about 4 minutes in.

First of all, just because you don't like a band of music genre doesn't automatically mean they have no talent. They got to where they are because people like them. That doesn't mean that they have as much talent as Metallica, but it does mean that they have a sound that people like.

Second, a lot of bands may not have much talent, like emo bands, but they do have lyrics that teenagers can relate to and like. Chris Cabarra may not have lengthy guitar solos and crazy guitar riffs, but he connects with teenagers and gives them music that mirrors their thoughts.

Third, everybody has different tastes, much dependant on their environment and what they were brought up listening to. There is no one pure music that everybody likes, it jsut cannot be.

In other words, you guys =
I agree with this very much.

While I despise bands like Linkin Park, or system of a Down, it's only because I dont like the way they play their instruments. I'm a guiatrist, who's come from a classical background, then moved right into rock, then metal. I've found that the really simple stuff doesn't impress me anymore, and thats why well..I've moved into metal. Not to say that 'softer' bands aren't any good at all. softer meaning when compared to the bands I listen to.

I equate it was this. AS long as it makes you happy, damn right, but when someone once told me that the Dude from Linkin Park, That funny looking guitarist guy with those funny lookin' headphone could outplay some of my Favorite Guiatrists, i.e. Peter Lindgren, Ywngie Malmsteen, Jesper Stromblad, I flipped my top. I seriously shouted at the guy, ' DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO THE HELL MALMSTEEN IS?'. (Ps...Malmsteen is a jerk, but you know what? he could play my pants off. lol)
People Suck, and opinions suck, Lol.

It'll never be a fact based thing, music- other than sales, and a following. Unless you're talking on terms of skill, how long someone has been playing their instrument, or strict things like that-No ONE band is better than the other, no ONE form of music better than the other. I mean, look at my bands, and look at the 'maintstream' bands.

killswitch Engage, Inflames, Opeth, Embraced, Susperia, all bands that literally play in circles around poppunk, and other 'nu metal bands'. Whats the difference? Air time!

While I hate that the bands/guitarists that I look up to get to recognition on a larger scale, I also love that I listen to bands from othert countries, as well as our own- That not many people know exist. I take great pride in saying....'Yeah, I was listening to (band name) And...oh, you dont know the,? Dude, borrow rthis Cd, you'll love it.' I like having something not many people know about. I'm not selfish, I just enjoy it. I guess it's also why i love my mag. Last week at Velocity, i had four or five Karnivore/DM4 shooters come up to me, and tell them how muhc thy miss their mag, and how awesome it was.

I think people need to let go of this, and just listen to it. If you dont like someone else's music........make sure yours' is louder

This rant sucks, I'm sorry guys.

yeah,to me what's missing from music today is the guitar solo , and I'm not talking about the pansy little 30 second solos that you today I'm talking, Jimmy Page, Randy Rohdes, Kerry King, ect solos. Where's the more complicated guitars riffs that make the music fun to listen to. It seems that bands are just so quick to put out albums to please their labels that no thought goes into what they're writing.

On the other hand I don't think just because the music isn't complicated or isn't hard doesn't necessarily make it bad. Look at Radiohead and Coldplay. I'll admit when I first heard coldplay I really wasn't too impressed but once I REALLY started listening to the music I found that it's not just about big guitar riffs or double bass but more about timing and really making a song flow. I think this is what really makes these two bands stand out at least from a musical standpoint. Sure their stuff isn't the fastest or most techincal but it is dynamic and that's what's missing from a lot of the newer bands of today.

Another good Post, and i myself am into BOTH Radiohead and Coldplay. I guess I'm biased, but I'm really trying to give alot of bands today a chance, and none of them really meet my 'standards'.
