    i HATE CompUSA

My computer falls from a table with the network card in it, and smashes up the network card and what looks like the pins inside. I take it to CompUSA, and they have a some jerk talking down to me because i called it a pcmcia socket, he goes do you know what that stands for? i was like uhh no and he goes well then why do you say it? anyways, he tells us that it will be 140$ to just look at it, and they are backed up for more than a week. a week goes by, and two days later he calls me and tells me that "a few pins are bent, they cant fix it", it seems like they could maybe just try to bend them back? nope that would be wayyyy too easy and might even cost them extra money! Now, before that, the computer had not had ONE problem, i had Spysweeper, ad-aware with the latest updates, spybot search and destroy, spyblaster, and used mozilla firefox, this computer was clean as a whistle with not one techincal problem. I had a few earlier that had stopped randomly that were because of Windows ME. Anyways, i get the computer back, plug the usb wireless internet in, and im rolling. all of a sudden, my computer shuts down. i figured hey i have a a few windows open, and aim was on, maybe it overloaded or something. i figure no biggie, i just cant do that anymore (note:i used to be able to browse through 20+ windows, aim going, music playing, no problems). i turn it back on, the scandisk starts to run because of the improper shut down, and then it shuts down again. now im starting to be annoyed. i turn it back on AGAIN and this time i get all the way to the log on screen before it shuts down. i turn it back on YET AGAIN and let the scan disk run a thorough check this time. it doesnt shut down, and is fine, stayed on all night. then today, it has happened twice almost like that. im convinced that CompUSA put my computer back together either wrong, or something is out of place or in the way of the power supply, because when it shuts down it is plugged in, and has full battery. you would think if i payed 140$ for them to just look at, they could atleast put it back together right if not fix it for the same fee. now im left with my brothers identical laptop which is working right now, but always messes up, and my computer is so tempermental i hate using it. I'm convinced that this is the work of CompUSA.

My computer hates me as well It doesnt shut off like yours, but it screws up doing the simplest thing( opening up one IE Explorer). If I were you I'd go to the manager and tell him about the rude person working there. Good luck with everything, computer problems suck.

Ugh compusa sucks, and so do comp guys that why it is alwasy heolpful to have altelas tone comp nerd friend casue most of the time they nknow more than the employess of comp usa, u dont have to pay them, and they will work on it till it is fixed. I happen to have 3, one of them actually built pretty much my entire comp and it works uberly amazing. And it is possible to bend pins back on things, but rather dificult and sometimes dosnet work. Example i had jsut gottne my new processor whihc we were using in my comp and when i pulled it out of the package i accidently dropped it and bent one of the pins on it. OHH POOOO. But luckly xmetal2001( one of my comp ner friends, who isnt really a nerd but knows a poo load bout comps, that is also on this forum) was able to bend it back into place for me. And get everythig to fit.

And what ive been told bout comp usa there standard precidure in fixing comps is run anti virus, if that dosent work then they reformat. Ohh such technical genius that requires.

haha yeah that guy did sound like a jerk. technically you were wrong, but he didn't need to be an arse about it.

don't take your broke computer to compusa/bestbuy find someone who works with computers and ask them. a lot of times they know more than the geeks at the stores...

If it's a PC card network adapter, then yes, it is a PCMCIA card. Unless they just call the slot a PCMCIA slot, and the card a PC card. But then again maybe he was just always picked on in high school and finds trying to make people who know what they're talking about sound stupid even though he's the friggen moron morally justifying (take a breath, that was a mouthful, lol)

Anyways one day I was looking for a monitor for my friend (at CompUSA) and I asked one of the clerks if they had any aperture grille monitors. He said they only had dot matrix, then went to the other clerks and I overheard him saying something to the effect "pssh, aperture grille, hahaha"

For those that don't know, aperture grille monitors have wires instead of dots, which is what dot matrix has. They're supposed to get better color quality and look generally better than dot matrix.

But yes, the network card inside your laptop would be a PCMCIA card, and I would've just knocked that out at CompUSA

PCMCIA is Personal Computer Memory Card International Assoiation
But my favorite parody acronym is the same

Yeh... it would have been fun that night when he went to get in his car and it didn't start

Yeh, I can fix it, eventually, and that will be at least $200 - unless you know where this fuse/relay/wire go

One of my friends was once being an arse about something I knew nothing about, I walked out and took the PCM fuse from his car. I offered to sell it back to him for being civil - I even offered to reinstall it.

Most computers aren't all that hard to fix. Like someone else said, find a friend that knows about em. Also, if you think you can bend the pins back, try it, it shouldn't screw anything up any worse. Don't listen to the people at compusa, from past experiences, they don't seem to know much. Also, if you don't like your sales clerk, walk away and find another or ask him to find you another. He'll get all pissy and what not, but who cares, if he really wanted the sale or wanted to be helpful we wouldn't have acted like a jerk.

As for the computer, you said it fell from the table? Will it boot up at all? Like go past the log in screen? If not you may have crashed your hard drive. It may not be that severe, but you probably have other problems than the messed up nic card. Computers don't like falling.

I used to work at CompUSA. The guys who work in the tech shop aren't necessarily dumb, although they aren't highly trained. They just don't care. They spend more time seeing what porn you have on your computer than actually fixing it.

lol, i recommend taking your time with bending pins, i bent one on my subwoofer by accident and i snapped it and another one off trying to bend it back, basically it wasnt going to work again i thought but i got creative and put the pins into the other end and stuck some aluminum foil pieces to make a connected lol, now it works but it cuts out sometimes when the connection breaks lol
