AO: We are back from the dead... again! After an 18 day outage, we are finally alive and well. Who knew how complicated updating software/databases from 2008 would be. I still have alot of tweaks to make, but my main goal was getting everything patched and updated to 2026.
Vbulletin 6 has changed alot since 2008 so we will have a ton of new features to dig into.
So by your line of reasoning Bush has "helped" create US casualties in Iraq by not supplying "our troops with enough Kevlar vests and armored Humvees? Congress not the Bush administration had to add supplements to the bill to include Kevlar vests and armored Humvees."
Last I checked, the President can't authorize spending due to a little thing called the Constitution. The President had no control over what got authorized and what didn't. But your little buddy Hanoi John voted against the bill. He deffinately helped kill troops in Iraq. Keep em coming, the liberal has become so wrong and so obtuse that there is no justification left for their existance. Hanoi John will be just the first of your kind to go down.
If I remember right Kerry voted it down because there were "other" attachments to that bill that he didn't like. Much like you said Bush is doing in your above statement, ["No he said he isn't going to support the bill that ends the ban if includes a bunch of amendments that have nothing to do with the revocation of the ban."
Now don't get me wrong. I love shooting rifles and what not. I just wanna know why anyone has to own these types of things? Don't give me the "it's our right" crap either.

Its a matter of choice. The rifles in question function the same way other semi-automatic rifles do. A Mini van performs the same function as a Corvette. Should one be banned because it looks different than the other?
You and I both own black Emags. How would you feel if we were told we could only have neon pink stingrays because the Emags were black and looked more "dangerous" to the uninformed masses. That is basically what the AWB was.
I think you misunderstood the question I asked. I was asking the reason someone wants one? What is the practical usage of one? Etc. I could care less about the ban. Just curious as to the reason people own these. By the way my brother owns a Chinese SKS assault rifle.
I did a thesis on firearm laws for college a few years back. Some interesting facts (mind you, from 85-95, these facts were gathered): something like 90% of violent crimes in LA we committed by stolen guns, 70% of which were stolen police firearms. Now, just recently, they released ANOTHER study from LA: A large percentage of firearms stolen in CA end up in LA. 75% of them are stolen from only a handful of stores. Leads one to think: either the store is in on it, or doesnt take security seriously. Either way, the storeowners were never punished.
Also, Washington DC, where it is ILLEGAL to own a firearm, consistently had the highest violent crime rate for several years, of crimes committed with a firearm.
Looking at this, you tell me how having a flash suppressor on my hand built M-4 is going to increase gun violence.
People, I think, especially the uninformed, forget one simple matter: criminals will, almost always, use an illegal firearm, if that is their weapon of choice. Most firearm owners I know are EXTREMELY responsible. I understand this isnt universal; but, when was the last time you heard of a liscenced samaritan committing a crime with a liscenced firearm? Not to say it doesnt happen...but it IS rare.
Its always the bad points you hear about, just like in paintball. Every time an accident happens, we are labelled a "dangerous" sport. We all know better, its usually the idiots that cause the problem. same with the stupid assualt weapon ban.
I am all for liscencing, and safety courses: I just dont think that the law should restrict what I wish to purchase, basing it on some inane belief that it will "reduce crime". totally unfounded.
Hanoi John will be just the first of your kind to go down.
I am a moderate politically. Just what do you mean by the "the first of your kind to go down"?
If by "my kind" you mean those of us that think we are now creating more terroists in Iraq faster than we are killing them than ok, I can live with that.
The difference between you and me is that if Bush wins I wont like but I will deal with it. But after hearing all your "tough" talk and anger towards Kerry, I'd hate to think what you would do if Kerry wins.
Perhaps you will start to foam at the mouth and twitch uncontrollably or would you flap your arms so fast in frustration you will actually start to hover?
Please, out of genuine concern it might healthy for you to mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of a Kerry victory.
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." --Benjamin Franklin
blah . . . .Don't give me the "it's our right" crap either.
Just remember this when belittling others for exercising their rights - Once a freedom is gone, it almost never returns. Those that do return are usually bought back with blood.
Since I've always been a personal freedoms kinda guy, I ask the question - Why shouldn't you be able to have them? Who does it hurt, if you or I own a random black rifle with a bayonet lug on it?
The old retort of "Tell me why you would need that." is such a copp out anyway. Talk about a non-answerable question. You might as well say "Tell me why you would need a red shirt." or "Why would you need 14 different models of Nike tennis shoe?"
The short answer is - you don't. You, me, everyone could survive just fine with only one color of shirt, and only one model of Nike shoe, or only one manufacturer of shoes period. But, go down that road a little ways, and all of a sudden things around here would start to look an awful lot like China. And that's just not good eats.
We want to be able to buy an "assault weapon" because there is no reason we shouldn't be able to. Just like we want to travel without "papers" because there is no reason we shouldn't be able to. Or worship whatever god we deem fit. Or whatever. Its the principal of the thing. A principal that many of our grand fathers, and fathers, and brothers fought and died to protect. If they could see the way folks now a days just hand over their freedoms without a moment's thought, they'd slap the **** out of them.
I'll leave with my favorite quote from the Federalist Papers ('cause I know someone is going to play the "we gotta do it to be safe from terrorists" card).
It goes like this - "He who would give up but a little of his freedom in exchange for security, deserves neither freedom, nor security."
The Founding Fathers - Rockin' the Personal Freedoms
Liberty
EDIT: Lather - Where did you see that quote credited to Ben Franklin? I have been rummaging through those papers for years now, and I still haven't been able to nail it to one guy. Still very true, regardless of who said it, I'm just curious (especially since Mr. Franklin gets credited for lots of things he didn't actually say) if you've found it.

I also seen the same quote attributed to Jefferson too!
Dont know why I really like the American Revolution era quotes, Jefferson, Adams, Henry among others. Another fav of mine:
"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your consul, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you; and may posterity forget ye were our countrymen."
-- Samuel Adams

MAn, I have like 30 30 rd mags leftover from the military...no more dirty looks!!!
Also, the streetsweeper is a full automatic shotgun (not sure if its select fire or not). Sorry, I am just happy this BS piece of legislation is over with...hence, the multiple posts.

I think I answered the question you asked, its is a matter of choice.
Why someone wants one is a personal choice. Some people like nicely finished wood stocks, others don't want to worry about having to take care of the nice wood and would prefer a more weather resistant material.
As for practicality, an AR-15 has many practical features for a civillian to consider. Its easy to get spare parts. Anyone with recent military experience will be familliar with the operation and maintenance of one. Cleaning one is easier than cleaning some other types of rifles. It splits in half and you can remove the bolt with no tools.
