If you would rather have the ability to work better, over looks then check out the Dell JukeBox

Its 341 right there, but thats with leather case, tape deck thing, controller (i think), and car charger?. I picked up a 15 gig one for 220 with leather case, 7000 songs is enough for me....hopefully.

Check out the iAudio. It has the same price as the ipod, comes with more accessories (a remote), and is smaller.

The 20 gig Ipod and over comes with a remote, carrying case/holder thingy, and dock. I seriously went with the one that had more third party accessories for it. The one that sold me was this! Perfect height in my car with the arms.

But, you're the one dropping the cash. There's always better things coming out and I'm sure there will be price breaks gallor before Christmas. I'd say wait until the day after Thanksgiving, then see what some places offer.

carnifex is right, the new 4th gen 20's do not come with any of the stuff you listed.

and whoever is talking about that sony, the 20 gig is 400 and has that "30 hours of battery" and the 40 gig is 500, but its got an lcd screen, not just an mp3 player.....

                      Rio Karma

I have a Rio Karma and love it. As far as I'm concerned, the only advantage the iPod has is accessories. But the sound and features on the iPod are as good or better, at a much lower cost.

I'm in the market for an Mp3 player as well and have been leaning towards the Ipod for a while (just don't want to drop the $$). Anyways one of my biggest hold ups is the inability of any Mp3 player to hook up to your car. I don't want a crappy FM transmitter or tape deck conveter I want to be able to hook the Ipod straight up to my car stero with a docking like station. Do any car audio makers sell decks that are compatible with mp3 players? I know the new BMWs have a system like I described, is there any company that makes something like that I can buy aftermarket and install in my car along with my Ipod? If the Ipod could do that I'd buy one right this very second. I see car audio Mp3 players with a detachable HDD and thats essentially what an Ipod is - a portable HDD - so why hasn't a company made the connection yet?

I'm rocking the Sony mini-disc player right now with only a few complaints.

Aceman - They already have! Certain Alpine head units are iPod friendly. They let you connect your iPod and shuffle the songs and such through the head unit controls. It all shows up on screen, too!

                          The iPod:

I think that the iPod and iTunes interface is one that no one has, or will for a good while, match. Very tightly knit. Very, very nice.

Now, to the idiot who said convert the MP3's to ATRAC:

You have got to be kidding me. Convert to ATRAC from a lossy format? What a stupid idea!
                          SO:

                          CD ----> MP3 ------> ATRAC

Not too smart. The music degenerates in the first phase with MP3's. Then, you take an already degenerated file and decide to convert to yet again another lossy format!!! Kind of stupid, no? Screw sound quality! Sony equipment, in my past experiences, is NOT the best you can get. Their CD players, MP3 players[ATRAC format, my bad], and mini disc units, along with their speakers, DVD players, and receivers ALL have poor sound quality. IMHO. They are at the bottom of the heap with Bose, in my opinion.

This is more a function of the headunit you're using. Any portable music device can be hooked up to your headunit if your headunit has an auxiliary in port. Some have this port on the back of the deck (so you'd have to run an adapter wire from inside your dash to where it can connect to your MP3 player), and a few others have this port on the front where you can easily connect/disconnect the MP3 player. In this case, you'd mostly be connecting to the MP3 player through the headphone jack.

In any case, if you want to drop the coin, most if not all MP3 players can have their docking stations set up in your car. Most are ugly and get in the way. Why not just plug it into the headphone jack of the MP3 player? This way, you can put the MP3 player wherever you want and not have a cumbersome dock exposed.

Thanks for the tip bluestrike, I've looked at car audio stuff before and couldn't find anything like that. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for... is Alpine the only company that makes ipod friendly headunits?
