Of course we didn't single handedly win anything, but without our help I have no doubt (and I don't know how anyone can) Germany would be much larger right now. Does anyone disagree with that?

Intersting thought.. not sure on the timeline of the classified information or what we were planning of course.. but I have a feeling our intervention would have been the day we nuked Berlin.

My next reply to this thread is politically extremely insensitive, historical inaccurate, and just plain mean. Although it would fit right in with the spirit of some threads I think I will spare everyone the disgust of having to read it and the moderators the time it would take to ban me so I could think about it.

You're right. GB was a crucial ally in defeating Germany. They are very much so repsonsible for the German defeat. But the US w/o GB and GB w/o the US would NOT have defeated Germany. GB wouldn't have been able to feed themselves, much less arm themselves were it not for US support. They were losing their empire all across asia as Japan took their posessions (which were then unprotected). GB never would have won the war without US support. The Same goes for Russia. That said, the war would not have been won without the Russians or the British.

I didnt read the article, nor this whole thread, but, I do wanna make a comment. This comes up every few years. The gov't largely suppressed the holocaust during WWII...for fear of retaliation against german american citizens, and out POWs. Now, that wasnt necessarily right, but, thewir reasons were at least rational (do a search, dont want to explain). Largely because of our perceived uncaring, alot of the Jewish people became angry with our lack of involvement, rightfully so. However, we, and, alot of Germany, never had any real proof of how large an operation it truly was. It was SEVERELY suppressed in Germany, to the point that this day some older folks still refuse to believe it. There werent many (if any) escapees, and we didnt begin rounding up the Nazis in charge till late in the war.
Whether or not this has any relevance to the article, again, I dont know...but, like I said, this isnt the first time this has popped up.

I am not going to really voice my opinion here because it would turn into a giant paper, but I advise all of you to go out and do some real learning. Don't think you know everything from watching the History channel alone or what your high school history teacher told you...read a credible book on WW2 (not your textbook). Go out and read Richard Overy's "Why the Allies Won" and Overy's "The Origins of the Second World War"

I will make a few statements however. The Allies never would have won had the US not joined in. Churchill was quoted saying that he feared that if the US did not come to their assistance they would lose (if I could find the book it's in I would quote it directly, but it is currently mia).

People do not give enough credit to the Russians. The Russian generals Chuikov, Zhukov and Rodmistrov rounded up the last of the Germans and finished them off through very well drawn out tactics.

Finally this is going to be the most important statement I will say. There is no single decisive battle that led to the Allied victory in WW2. If you would like to challenge this statement, go for it, but be prepared to support your statement with historical facts.

correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt the US poised to finish off the Germans with an invasion of Berlin, but chose to give the "honor" to the Russians? so saying the Russians finished off the Germans, without giving credit to the fact that the US could have done so had they chose is a little misleading.
