If a madman hated the US and could covertly aid an attack on the US, do you believe he would do this or not? Of course not, he's a GOOD madman correct? Of course he would let us know if he was going to do that - it's only polite! He didn't have WMDs!!! It's acceptable if he attacks us through conventional means, as long as it's not a WMD! I don't find WMDs nearly as dangerous as a madman with a pointed stick willing to do harm.
Some time in my life, I will go to Iraq - perhaps on election day - and visit their museums. There will be war relics, photos, murals, and various artifacts that remind us all to not forget what hell war is - and what sacrifice was made to liberate a nation and protect ours. It will verify that I correctly and intelligently performed my civic duty in '04.
War is a necessarily absurd solution to an even more absurd problem. Sometimes that's what it unfortunately takes - for some this is difficult to understand. My heart doesn't understand it at all.
