I cant see why you have politicize the issue and the thread, there was virtually no public support for a war in Somalia so the US pulled out.

What do you think will happen if there comes a time when there is no public support for continued war in Iraq? I bet the same thing will happen, Bush will look for an out, and as soon as there can be an honorable way to leave he will take that opportunity so as not to endanger public support for himself and his party. (if this occurs during his administration).

Sorry if I offended you by responding to your friend. Maybe if he could make a mature arguement without flaming, I wouldnt have to treat him like a 12 year old.
Yes, I agree. But you could also say the opposite if the converse happened - when you see the videos of Iraqi human meat grinders in use, women raped in front of their families and then disemboweled, torture cells and severely crowded rooms with starving prisoners standing in pools of human waste, human beings being melted alive in chemical baths, flesh wasting off the bodies of children due to prior WMDs that Hussein had, terrorists against the election of Bush, terrorists that without a doubt were and are present in Iraq (were they in knitting clubs before we attacked?). Liberals tend to only remember the attrocities that are convenient.

But what about other countries where attrocities are committed? The difference is power and the ability to harm us. The UN should deal with those nations, I'm disappointed that they have not.

If a madman hated the US and could covertly aid an attack on the US, do you believe he would do this or not? Of course not, he's a GOOD madman correct? Of course he would let us know if he was going to do that - it's only polite! He didn't have WMDs!!! It's acceptable if he attacks us through conventional means, as long as it's not a WMD! I don't find WMDs nearly as dangerous as a madman with a pointed stick willing to do harm.

Some time in my life, I will go to Iraq - perhaps on election day - and visit their museums. There will be war relics, photos, murals, and various artifacts that remind us all to not forget what hell war is - and what sacrifice was made to liberate a nation and protect ours. It will verify that I correctly and intelligently performed my civic duty in '04.

War is a necessarily absurd solution to an even more absurd problem. Sometimes that's what it unfortunately takes - for some this is difficult to understand. My heart doesn't understand it at all.

I cant argue with you there, but I think that the media wont cover much of Iraq's atrocities against its own people because of ratings and the fact that Hussein is removed. I think there is a belief that with Hussein gone, there will be an end to atrocities if we just packed up and left. I honestly think the media doesnt stress the fact that even though Hussein is in custody, that other monsters remain in Iraq. Most of them we probably never even heard of before.

The UN should handle lower intensity conflicts on thier own. But I also think the US should do more to encourage the UN to take more intiative.

One thing I always wondered about, where were the Muslim countries when Somalia was such a mess? I never understood how they could let their fellow Muslims starve and suffer at the hands of warlords. They should be ashamed of themselves that a Christian nation cared more about Somalians than their fellow Muslims.

Hehe yes no such thing as a good madman. The problem is that I think that the Iraq and whole Middle East has a whole slew of madmen in reserve. If we get rid of one or two or a hundred, who's to say another wont take his place in the future? Not just in Iraq, but Syria, Iran, UAE, etc..

I dont share your optimism about the future of Iraq though. It just seems to me it will turn out to be a Vietnam part II. But I do hope Im wrong about this and you get your chance to take your trip.
